784130 DEVELOPMENT OF CENTRI919GAL MCOELS TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF UI~LIFT PRESSURES ON THE STABILITY OF A FLOOD BANK Hind, C C; Marsland, A; Schofield, A N Geotechnique, V28, NI, 1978, P85-I06 In centrifuge teats, 1/60 and 1/75 scale model embar~ments were brought to an equilibri~n state representing an ideal prototype embar/ament constructed on a clay layer overlying a waterbearing pervious layer. The models were subjected to various combinations of gravity and uplift water pressure to study possible interaction between these different disturbing faces. The results indicate that interaction is unlikely to occur for a prototype bank and marsh layer having the same dimensions and soil properties as the model at the modelling acceleration. 784131 SEEPA(~ FLOW PROBLEMS BY VARIATIONAL INEQUALITIES: THEORY AND APPROXIMATION Kikuchi, N Int J Nun Anal Meth Geomech, V1, N3, July-Sept 1977, P283- 297 The theory of variational inequalities, which enables the formulation and solving of free boundary problems in fixed domains, is demonstrated by simple examples. The method is applied to the analysis of seepage flow throtwgh a rectangular dam with a free boundary. Practical solutions of variatior~l inequalities can only be made with the aid of approximation methods, and an approximation theory is developed by finite element methods.

Descrl some applications of these piles in practice. 784144 NOTE ON THE S ~ ~ OF PILED STRUCTURES Wood, L A Ground Engrg, VII, N4, May 1978, P38-42 The behaviour of am unusual six-storey office block supported on large diameter bored piles fourded in Lordon Clsy is discussed. The relevs_nt structural details and results of the sit investigation are summariaed. Computed and rues sured settlements are compared and a simple method derived for estimating total and differ ential settlements of piled structures. This procedure is then applied to another piled bui ing and again good agreement is obtained between the measured a~d computed settlement.
