Welcome to ISFSI2016! Fish and shellfish are an increasingly important component of global food security, and aquatic animal health knowledge and infrastructure are of concomitant importance. Aquatic animal health professional and researchers across the World find themselves fulfilling a crucial role in protecting their country’s aquatic animal health status. Sound research in the immunology of fish and shellfish is critical, and underpins management and response to infectious pathogens, and prevents the spread of aquatic animal diseases. It is critical to safeguarding the health of aquatic resources and maintaining our food security and human health. This may only be the 2nd conference of the International Society of Fish & Shellfish Immunology, but the history of the Society goes back much further in time. In 1990 fish immunologists from all Nordic countries initiated a collaboration to reduce diseases in aquaculture. The first meeting of this immunology group was held in Copenhagen in 1990. This group was called The Nordic Society of Fish Immunology (NOFFI). After that, NOFFI meetings took place in Tromsö, Norway (1991), Lysekil, Sweden (1993), Reykjavik, Iceland (1995), Hirtshals, Denmark (1998), Oslo, Norway (2001), and Turku, Finland (2004). In 2007 the NOFFI society decided to change its name to  European Organisation of Fish Immunology (EOFFI)  to extend its activities  to other countries besides the Nordic territory. The change resulted in meetings being held outside the Nordic countries: Scotland (2007) and in Viterbo, Italy (2010), where it was decided to establish a new International Society of Fish and Shellfish Immunology (ISFSI). In this new society, the immunology of shellfish was included for the first time. ISFSI was established in 2010, and the first meeting under this name was held in Vigo (Spain) in 2013. Thinking back to our attendance at the Oslo meeting in 2001, we are amazed at the strides that have been made in understanding immune responses of an incredible range of fish and shellfish species. The rapid development of mucosal immunology research, the massive increase in understanding of host-pathogen interactions, and the incredible knowledge gained from functional genomics research are just a few of the advances made. Now, 15 years later, the University of Maine’s Aquaculture Research Institute is proud to host the 2nd Conference of ISFSI, in Portland, Maine, June 26-30, 2016, and this is the first time any meeting of the Society has been held outside of Europe! With 200+ abstracts to be presented, an anticipated 300 attendees, and sessions including Vaccines & Vaccinations, Molluscan Immunology, Crustacean Immunology, Fish Immunology, Echinoderm Immunology, Effect of Diet on the Immune System, Functional Genomics and Host-pathogen Interactions (Viral, bacterial and parasite), this conference promises to be an outstanding knowledge sharing experience. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Scientific committee, and Maine’s aquaculture community, welcome to Portland, and enjoy ISFSI 2016! Sincerely Tim Bowden Anne Langston
