Welcome from the Congress Volunteer Coordinator SATURDAY, MARCH 29, TO THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2008
W
hen you think of Anaheim, California, what first comes to mind? If you are a sports enthusiast, you might think of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or the 2007 Stanley Cup winners, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. If theme parks are your thing, you might think of Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure, or Knott’s Berry Farm. If you are tired of bad weather, you may be thinking of blue skies, sunny days, and the close proximity of the beautiful California beaches. For many of us, however, when we think of Anaheim, we think of a wonderful place to hold the 2008 AORN Congress. Attending AORN’s 55th Congress offers you an opportunity to enjoy some of the best that Southern California has to offer. The Anaheim Convention Center is easy to navigate and within walking distance of many hotels. Anaheim city leaders recognized the value of the 1,100-acre area surrounding the Convention Center and Disneyland by spending $5 billion to transform it and declaring it the Anaheim Resort District. The Anaheim Convention Center has 1.6 million square feet, making it the largest convention center on the West Coast. The unique and beautiful design of the building includes $13 million of wave-patterned glass. Anaheim boasts several art museums, the
Crystal Cathedral, and Legoland, which is only one hour south on Interstate 5. For shoppers, there are many shopping opportunities including the Anaheim Indoor Market Place outlet mall, the Anaheim Plaza Mall, the Huntington Beach 5 Points Plaza, Fashion Island in Newport Beach, the Lab Antimall and South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, and the Westfield Mainplace in Santa Ana. When it comes to dining, the list goes on and on with choices for every taste and pocketbook. For specific recommendations, check with the Information Desk at the Convention Center. This year the Exhibitors’ Advisory Committee has chosen to hold the Nurse/Exhibitors’ Party at Knott’s Berry Farm. Knott’s Berry Farm became America’s first theme park in 1940, and it now comprises 160 acres of world-class rides and Camp Snoopy, featuring the Peanuts gang. The most important reasons to come to Anaheim, however, are as President Steiert’s theme suggests: to Share Your Passion and Illuminate Our Profession. The Center for Perioperative Education and the Congress Education Planning Committee have worked diligently to establish a week of outstanding educational offerings designed for perioperative nurses of all levels. These offerings will cover a variety of topics for all specialties. This is also a great time to see old friends, to make new ones, and to network with colleagues from around the country and world. Additionally, we can extend a warm welcome to first-time attendees and share our passion for our profession. Congress also is a time for members of AORN to conduct the business of our organization. You will recognize this year’s Congress volunteers by their blue shirts, which symbolize the Convention Center’s trademark “blue wave” and California’s blue skies and blue Pacific waters. We hope to see you in Southern California at the end of March!
