productnews Welded fabric filter element launched for general filtration duties At the heart of the new Hayflow filter element, launched by Hayward Industrial Products, is two concentric circles of fabric welded together to form a no-by-pass seam. The fabric is fitted into a metallic basket with a cap on the top and bottom for application in general filtration duties. The Hayflow element is intended as an alternative to conventional bag or cartridge filters and uses a patented Sentinal® sealing ring to provide a positive seal. The fabric is offered in two standard forms as either polypropylene (PP) or polyester needlefelt media. These are the two most popular material choices in the filtration industry and act as the active filtration devices in the Hayflow element. Specific original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) requirements for other media choices can also be accommodated, as long as the material is weldable, but PP is expected to be the most popular option and is the media that Hayward expects to receive most demand for from end users. The needlefelt fabric construction technique will be utilised whatever material is chosen. The Hayflow filter element is available in standard bag filter sizes, enabling retrofitting into existing systems. It can be specified in the standard 01 or 02 size, which corresponds to 18 cm in diameter by 41 cm in length and 18 cm x 81 cm, respectively. According to the manufacturer, the element has 70% more surface area than a comparable standard filter bag thanks to its innovative design, which it claims will offer enhanced performance characteristics. When in operation, process fluid enters the inside of the Hayflow element, passes through it, and exits through the
vessel outlet. In contrast to cartridge filters, the filtered out material stays inside the Hayflow element, so filter changeout times and the potential for contaminating the process line will be reduced. Of course, a filter bag offers similar advantages, but the manufacturer of the Hayflow element claim that it will be physically easier to change-out. It retains only 25% of the residual liquid volume of a similarly sized filter bag according to tests conducted by the manufacturer, meaning it can weigh up to 75% less than a standard filter bag. In addition, this allows it to have a smaller footprint for compact application duties. Contact: Hayward Industrial Products Inc, 900 Fairmont Avenue, Elizabeth, NJ 07207, USA.
