What You Can Do with This Book This is a book about the engineering (and perhaps chemistry) of cleaning surfaces with solvents. It is a book based on the disciplines of engineering, and the experiences of this author and coworkers. If the guidance found in this book is followed to a moderate degree, the user will have the information and basis to:

Make good decisions about selection of equipment and facilities to be both effective in dissolving soils from surfaces, and protecting the personnel who use them as well as the environment into which they are used, and to Have knowledge necessary to implement those decisions. Study within this book will lead to an understanding of:

Why parts aren’t effectively dried. Why vacuum drawdown takes too much time. Why vacuum capability isn’t used for cleaning. Why rinsing in a soy/HFE cosolvent machine leaves residues. Which combinations of solvents shouldn’t be combined in a cosolvent machine. Why costs of cleanup of "tailpipe emissions" of solvent by adsorption can be excessive. Which vacuum pumps offer the least potential for failure. Why one shouldn’t use lip vents. Why open-top machines are normally sited in a pit. How parts should be organized in a cleaning basket. How air amplifiers may be the most valuable part of a solvent cleaning machine.
