Editorial Where Are They? For some time, a n u m b e r of neurological surgeons have been saying that there are too many neurosurgeons and that the n u m b e r of young men and w o m e n being trained in neurological surgery should be reduced. SURGICAL NEUROLOGY has been saying that the facts do not support this contention and that too many neurosurgeons are not being trained. In our opinion, specific areas of the world, including parts of the United States, do not have adequate access to neurosurgical care. A n u m b e r of neurosurgeons in solo practice are searching for associates. Academic neurosurgical programs are understaffed. N o t enough neurological surgeons are being produced each year to replace those who die or retire.

We have cited information from various sources to support our view. N o w the Journal of Neurosurgery presents additional evidence to indicate the need for m o r e neurological surgeons. In the January 1983 issue of that journal, there are a n u m b e r of advertisements seeking neurosurgeons to fill posts, both in academic and private practice. N i n e t e e n is a large number, though we feel certain that there are considerably more opportunities available, not to mention the unfilled needs in many other countries outside of the United States.
