This volume contains thirteen papers given at a meeting on 'Testing of General Ecological Theory in Lotic Ecosystems' held in conjunction with the 29th Annual Meeting of the North American Benthological Society in Provo, Utah, in April 1981. The Editors consider that they demonstrate how 'Stream ecology is coming of age'. The papers do illustrate how purely descriptive studies are giving way to the formulation of new concepts and new theoretical constructs.

Analytical chemists have greatly improved the accuracy of their results by several orders of magnitude in the last fifty or so years. As a result, such concepts as 'zero tolerance' for toxic chemicals are now a nonsense. Ion mobility spectroscopy, described in some detail both from the theoretical and practical points of view, is taking this process a step farther.
