Why publish Non- Destructive Testing? This journal is for the e n g i n e e r in i n d u s t r y who n e e d s i n f o r m a t i o n on ndt to help him run a production line or a plant. It is a l s o for the m a n a g e r who has to take d e c i s i o n s on the r e s u l t s of n o n - d e s t r u c t i v e t e s t i n g .

The subject of non-destructive testing comprises a variety of techniques whose common factor is that they can be used to test an object 100°£ without in any way. making it unfit for subsequent service.

N o n - D e s t r u c t i v e T e s t i n g will w r i t e about the e s t a b l i s h e d techniques of ndt ( r a d i o g r a p h y , u l t r a s o n i c s and m a g n e t i c , e l e c t r i c a l and p e n e t r a n t m e t h o d s ) and about the n e w c o m e r s ( t h e r m o g r a p h y , n e u t r o n r a d i o g r a p h y , acoustic e m i s s i o n etc): also about the l e s s widely known equipment and methods ( e n d o s c o p e s , for e x a m p l e , and automatic c i r c u i t t e s t e r s ) . As often a s p o s s i b l e it will look at the p r o b l e m s with the u s e r ' s e y e s , t h e man who has c r a c k s in his c a s t i n g s or m y s t e r i o u s f a i l u r e s in his c o n c r e t e and m u s t do s o m e t h i n g immediately.

We have foundedthis journal because the techniques of nondestructive testing are worthy of the immediate attention of every manufacturer and operator of plant, both as a means of improving his product and of detecting incipient failure.

F o r the m a n a g e r N o n - D e s t r u c t i v e T e s t i n g will w r i t e about c o s t s and s a v i n g s , about o r g a n i z a t i o n and t r a i n i n g . Both the m a n a g e r and the e n g i n e e r should c o n c e r n t h e m s e l v e s with the r e s u l t s of r e s e a r c h , b e c a u s e r e s e a r c h in ndt often t u r n s v e r y quickly into p r a c t i c e . F o r t h e m NonD e s t r u c t i v e T e s t i n g will i n t e r p r e t r e s e a r c h and for benefit of the r e s e a r c h o r d e v e l o p m e n t e n g i n e e r it will publish r e s e a r c h p a p e r s without delay. A r t i c l e s will be contributed by e x p e r t s and in all its writing N o n - D e s t r u c t i v e T e s t i n g will be guided by an e d i t o r i a l b o a r d who a r e r e g u l a r l y c o n c e r n e d with ndt and can b r i n g to t h e i r task a wide and p r a c t i c a l knowledge.

Applied during production non-destructive testing enables the manufacturer to test his raw material. A non-destructive test of the finished job will enable him to vouch for its quality to the customer. A~ part of a maintenance programme regular inspection is the biggest factor in preventing unscheduled downtime and unexpected failures. Such activities as electricity generation, atomic energy, railways and airlines recognized long ago that wherever a failure is expensive or dangerous, there is a need for ndt. Large organizations of all kinds continue to refine ndt and to develop new methods. Meanwhile all industry can draw on their experience. The methods are cheap and not too timeconsuming. The equipment is on sale, backed by advice and training courses. Non-Destructive Testing will bring news and instruction at all levels so that industry at large can benefit from the advances now being made in ndt.
