Grundfos prepares to weather financial storm The Grundfos Group has experienced both financial ups and downs in 2008. Sales growth was in line with expectations, with turnover increasing by DKK 2.2 billion to a total of DKK 19.0 billion. However, much of this growth took place in the first six months of the year. End of year results showed profit before tax at DKK 959 million against DKK 1.4 billion of the previous year. Grundfos said the main causes for the lower profits were due to fluctuating demand and declining rates of the most important foreign currencies. Grundfos Group president, Carsten Bjerg explained: “Sales have grown in several markets. For instance, sales in Russia have grown by 25%, in China by 22%, in India by

16%, and by 13% in the German market where in particular the energy saving circulation pumps have gained ground; finally the organic growth of 12% in USA is also satisfying.” However, Bjerg went on to say that the party is now over. “We have to adapt ourselves to a world in serious recession, and we may not even have seen the worst yet. We expect the turnover and profit level of 2009 to be somewhat below 2008. We must be cost conscious, ready for adjustments and flexible in all parts of the business. Now we must focus on a strict control of our cost development, operating capital and investment level, and this has resulted in reductions of the labour force.” www.grundfos.com/news

2009 pump sales forecast at $32 billion McIlvaine reports that despite the recession, in 2009 pumps sales are predicted to be $32 billion worldwide. In its latest analysis of the pump market, the McIlvaine Company sees pump sales in 2009 remaining steady at $32 billion worldwide, the same as 2008. However, while some markets will see substantial reductions in revenues, others will experience gains. The report, Pump World Markets, sees centrifugal pumps as the biggest product group with predicted revenues of $23,872 million over the year. Rotary pumps will beat the diaphragm segment with $1 billion more in revenues. Reciprocating pump sales of around

$2,330 million will be slightly lower than sales of diaphragm pumps of $2,786 million. The industries that are expected to show the biggest increase include municipal water and municipal wastewater. These two markets combined will generate $12 billion in revenues, with the stimulus funding in the US and China being the main drivers for the increase. The power market will remain flat, but there will be decreases in chemicals, mining, metals, refinery, stone and pulp and paper. Asia will show modest increases whereas the European market will shrink. www.mcilvainecompany.com/ brochures/water.html#N019.

SPX Process equipment combines sales teams SPX Process Equipment is combining its external field sales forces to form a single sales team for its Bran + Luebbe, Plenty Mirrlees and JP pumps businesses in the UK. The company says that the creation of a single sales team will provide SPX PE with a highly focused national capability for all its pump brands and services. The single sales team will be led by Peter Robinson. The existing internal sales teams will remain at Brixworth (B+L), Crawley (JP) and Glasgow (PMP). According to SPX PE, combining the technical resources of the B+L, PMP and JP pump businesses will give the company more effective and efficient coverage. For

its customers, a single sales team will offer speedier access to all the company’s varied pump ranges and technical support services. The range of pump types available includes metering/dosing, internal gear, air operated diaphragm, rotary lobe, centrifugal, rotary, screw and vane pumps. Announcing the development, SPXPE UK sales director Chris Riseley reported that there were significant synergies already existing between the three sales forces, not least in their common industry sector and markets. The situation is similar in Germany, where the same sales strategy is being adopted. www.spxprocessequipment.com www.worldpumps.com
