Volume XXXIV: Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry ´ Diana Beauchemin, D. Conrad Gregoire, Detlef ¨ Gunther, Vassili Karanassios, Jean-Michel Mermet, Todd J. Wood The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique has been used in research laboratories since 1974, whereas commercial equipment is available from different manufacturers since 1983. In this book, the authors focus on the developments in discrete sample introduction techniques that took place from 1990 to the present, although earlier work is cited when appropriate. In the first chapter (D. Beauchemin), the current status of ICP-MS is reviewed, including fundamentals, instrumentation, sample introduction with common pneumatic nebulizers and alternative high-efficiency nebulization systems, analytical capabilities and mixed gas plasmas. This part of the book (approx. 210 pages, 564 references) is an excellent presentation and survey of the most important aspects of modern ICP-MS. It is a very useful introduction to the field for students and scientist from different analytical chemistry and spectroscopy backgrounds. The same author contributes the second chapter on flow injection techniques (approx. 130 pages, 330 references), discussing the principles of flow injection in general and paying much attention to various dispersion systems (limited dispersion, medium dispersion, large dispersion and reduced dispersion

systems). The theoretical part is also extensive considering the scope of the book. Fortunately, this is followed by a clear discussion of applications of the various flow injection techniques in combination with ICP-MS. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 cover electrothermal vapor´ ization sample introduction (D.C. Gregoire), laser ¨ ablation sample introduction (D. Gunther, J.-M. Mermet) and direct sample introduction (V. Karanassios, T.J. Wood). These chapters have been written by experts in their fields and provide a balanced survey of possibilities and limitations. The common advantage of all these techniques is the absence of background peaks in ICP-MS that originate from water. The chapter on electrothermal vaporization includes a discussion of chemical modifiers, physical carriers and analyte transport efficiency. Numerous successful applications are reported (approx. 100 pages, 193 references). The chapter on laser ablation sample introduction is clearly written and includes all the relevant information on laser principles, laser ablation systems, analytical figures of merit and applications (approx. 60 pages, 272 references). The final Chapter on direct sample insertion is a review of work that has been done to bring solid sample material directly into the plasma (approx. 60 pages, 72 references). Unfortunately, a chapter on ICP-MS based speciation techniques is missing from the present book, although similar transient signals are generated when ICP-MS is coupled to chromatography or other separation techniques. In summary, this book is highly recommended for use by analytical chemists and spectroscopists to learn more about the various discrete sample introduction techniques that are available in ICP-MS.
