HD Supply to sell Ameron’s uPole AMERON INTERATIONAL Corp has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with HD Supply Utilities for the distribution of Ameron’s uPole® composite utility pole throughout the USA, Canada and the Caribbean Islands. HD Supply, based in Orlando, Florida, is North America’s largest electric utilities distributor. The uPole is one of the latest products from Ameron’s Fiberglass-Composite Pipe Group. The shaft of the pole is made from E-glass fibre roving and epoxy resin using the filament winding process. The structural wall includes a sand-filled epoxy polymer mortar to provide added durability and stiffness. A weather resistant sand-covered pigmented epoxy coating is
applied over the outer structural layers. The uPole is said to be a more durable, cost-effective alternative to distribution poles made from wood, steel or concrete. It has the feel of concrete while offering the performance, toughness and lower weight of composite. The product is resistant to fire, UV and corrosion. The uPole is manufactured at Ameron’s composite products plant in Burkburnett, Texas, which has been making FRP pipe for 40 years. uPole is available in 30 ft to 55 ft lengths and two shaft sizes – 13 inch OD and 15 inch OD. Wind energy declines in USA WIND POWER installations for the first six months of 2010 have dropped by 71% from last year’s level, according to the latest quarterly report from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Even with 5.5 GW of wind power under construction and a more active second half of the year anticipated, AWEA projects that total 2010 installations will be 25-45% below 2009 installations, depending on policy developments. Combined first quarter (Q1) and second quarter (Q2) wind energy installations in 2010 are 1239 MW, 57% below

2008 half-year levels and 71% below 2009. AWEA and a coalition of renewable energy, labour, utility and environmental groups are calling on the US Congress to enact a strong national renewable electricity standard (RES) to spur demand for green power, attract manufacturing investment and save (and create) jobs. The USA is losing the clean energy manufacturing race to Europe and China, which have firm long-term renewable energy targets and policy commitments in place, warns AWEA. AWEA; www.awea.org
