The electronic medium, collectively known as the Internet, is host to a virtually unfathomable number of sites which provide information about food safety. Food Microbiology is pleased to announce our adventure into cyberspace with an Internet-based system for authors and reviewers to use. The system allows an author to track his or her manuscript through the acknowledgement, review and acceptance stage on-line, as well as to download copies of reviews as they are posted. The system is password protected so that only the corresponding author can view these files. Reviews are posted in Adobe Reader ŽPDF. format and they can be saved and printed using free software. In addition, reviewers can post their reviews back to the editorial office using on-line forms. The system has been in place for approximately 3 months and can be accessed through: http:rr132.236.147.104:591rfoodmicror

Why have we invested in this technology? Two basic issues motivate this editor toward embracing an electronic version of author tracking and review submission. First is the speed. Authors from around the world can check on the status of a manuscript at any time via the World Wide Web ŽWWW.. Second is the eventual hope that the large amount of paper being mailed around the world can be reduced and the overall process simplified. All authors and reviewers are provided with the appropriate passwords and can log into the system. I would encourage all of you to do so, not only to test drive the technology, but also to provide us with feedback. I can be reached at [email protected] and look forward to your compliments as well as your complaints.
