Legendary anatomic pathologist , Dr Samuel French, continues to be a virtual powerhouse of productive basic research on liver diseases, as well as a practicing pathologist. The author of nearly 400 original articles, 40 book chapters, hundreds of abstracts, multiple case reports and other publications, Dr French’s academic pursuits continue unabated at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, a beehive of activity to advance understanding of hepatic diseases.

A native mid-westerner, born in Milwaukee, Dr French graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed an internship in San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF, Department of Pathology and was Assistant Resident at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. After spending a brief stint as Instructor at Tulane in New Orleans, he returned to San Francisco General Hospital , UCSF, as Chief Resident and Instructor in Pathology Dr French advanced through the academic ranks at UCSF and UCLA Medical Schools. He has served on numerous NIH Study Sections and other granting agencies and is a member of many professional societies.

The recipient of a spate of research and teaching awards, Dr French served as Professor of Pathology at several medical schools in Canada, including Vancouver, British Columbia, and as Professor and Chair of Pathology at Ottawa, before returning to California, where he was Professor of Pathology at U.C. Davis, and finally at UCLA Harbor Medical Center, at Torrance, where he continues as Chair of Anatomic Pathology and Distinguished Professor. The author of more than 62 articles since 1972, in Experimental and Molecular Pathology alone, with 1,358 citations and more than 100 of a single paper, the average number of citations per article is 22. A long term Member of this journal’s Editorial Board, Dr French is the quintessential model of “a physician’s physician”, serving his profession with boundless energy and skill in unraveling the mechanisms of human disease The Board of Editors of Experimental and Molecular Pathology and Elsevier Publishers take great pride and satisfaction in saluting Dr Samuel W.
