BOOK REVIEW Workshop Theory and Exercises; J. KIRKHAM and H. HARRIS. Published by Blackie. Price £1 5s net. 165 pp. THIS book, which is comprehensively illustrated throughout by engineering drawings and sketches, is presented in the S.I. units of measurement. It is designed to meet the needs of students studying basic workshop practice and theory or engineering craft courses. The nineteen chapters cover the use of hand tools, bench work, forging, soldering and brazing, and simple lathe work with its associated tooling. Sheet metal work, simple engineering calculations, methods of taking measurements, comparison and use of gauges, and an introduction to engineering drawing is also included. A simple, but yet reasonably well presented text is well supported by diagrams and illustrations, a selection of appropriate questions and exercises is also included in each chapter. In a final section of the book useful conversion tables for inch and metric units are given along with the S.I. recommended metric drill and tapping particulars for screw threads. For those responsible for the teaching of elementary workshop practice and craft courses this will be a useful text, particularly with respect to the workshop exercises. R. H. THORNLEY
