World Association for Renewable Energy--News
R E N E W A B L E E N E R G Y : A HOT TOPIC Considerable interest has been shown, not only by scientists but by politicians and media commentators, in the Second World Renewable Energy Congress, which is to be held at Reading from 13 to 18 September 1992. The Congress will include Plenary Sessions and Panel Discussions on all renewable energies (including Solar, Thermal, Wind, Biomass, Wave, Tidal, Hydro and Ocean Power, Photovoltaic and Materials Technology, Hydrogen Production), and will also deal with Climatology and Meteorology (global warming, the greenhouse effect), Architecture and Building, taking account of Solar and Low Energy factors, and Economic and Political issues, including Taxation in relation to energy use and design for energy efficiency. Coming soon after the Brazil Earth Summit, the Congress highlights the crucial role which renewable energy can play both in developing and developed countries. Moreover, it indicates production of renewable energy devices, based on new technologies developed over the last few years, as a route out of recession for the industrial nations of the world. So far more than 550 abstracts have been submitted for papers which will be presented; additionally 150 speakers have been invited to address the Congress under the auspices of the 250-strong International Steering Committee of the World Association of Renewable Energy, which represents 130 countries. At the first Plenary Session on Monday 14 September (10.15 am) the Congress will be formally opened by Lord Carrington, who became Chancellor of the University of Reading in March. Those attending will be welcomed by the Congress Chairman, Professor A. A. Sayigh of the University's Department of Engineering ; by the President of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), Professor A. Goetzberger; and by the Chairman of ISES-Europe, Dr C. Corvi. Prince Hassan of Jordan is expected to attend the Congress. The Congress Programme at a Glance, showing events taking place in University buildings at Whiteknights, Reading, is overleaf. Throughout the period of the Congress there will be a Technical Exhibition and a Book Exhibition on the campus. Registration for the Congress is available at reduced rates until 1 July 1992.
