Arcola builds largest UK hydrogen vehicle fleet, with ITM Power
A
rcola Energy has now sold or leased 32 Renault Kangoo ZE-H2 electric vans – with a fuel cell range-extender produced by French company Symbio FCell – to UK customers, creating the nation’s largest hydrogen vehicle fleet. Arcola’s integrated package of onsite fuel and after-sales support for UK commercial fleets is provided in partnership with hydrogen fuel supplier ITM Power [see also page 9]. Its network of suppliers both within the UK and in Europe allows Arcola Energy to offer fleet managers a total solution for renewable, zero-carbon transport. It has become the ‘one stop shop’ in the UK for renewable-energy powered vehicle fleets, being directly involved in all aspects of the transport system, from fuel cells, through electric vehicles to refueling facilities. Arcola Energy is the UK representative for Symbio FCell, whose PEM fuel cell rangeextender offers a range of more than 200 miles (320 km) in the Renault Kangoo ZE-H2 light commercial vehicle [FCB, October 2016, p10]. Arcola’s partnership with ITM Power provides fleet customers with a simple solution for vehicle preparation, registration, insurance, site approvals, and staff training. This is in addition to maintenance & engineering support and training & education services, allowing fleet managers to fully realise the benefits of these vehicles, including a range twice that of comparable battery electric vehicles. This time last year Arcola and Symbio FCell signed an agreement with ITM Power to provide an integrated package of zero-emission commercial vehicles, onsite fueling and aftersales support for UK commercial fleet operators [FCB, November 2015, p7]. ITM recently followed this up with a fuel contract to supply hydrogen to Arcola at £10/kg (US$12.80) [September 2016, p8], and also to Commercial Group, which has been operating a fleet of hydrogen hybrid delivery vans – using a dieselhydrogen mix in converted internal combustion engines – since 2013 across London and southern England [February 2013, p8]. Arcola has also partnered with IMS Ecubes to develop whole-system energy and mobility solutions for market opportunities in Europe and South Asia [FCB, July 2016, p10 and November 2016, p1]. IMS Ecubes has just
launched a fuel cell combined heat and power (CHP) system [see page 5]. Arcola Energy, London, UK. Tel: +44 20 7503 1386, www.arcolaenergy.com ITM Power, Sheffield, UK. Tel: +44 114 244 5111, www.itm-power.com Symbio FCell, Grenoble, France. Tel: +33 1 5679 1506, www.symbiofcell.com
YC Synergy targets commercial vehicles with 4th-gen module
Y
C Synergy in Taiwan has launched its fourth-generation MB-209 series PEM fuel cell power module, completely integrated for commercial vehicle applications such as trucks, buses, and industrial vehicles. This new model has now started shipping for customer trials, according to DigiTimes.com. The MB-209 module is rated at 15 kW, and can be combined for higher output power. The total system footprint is less than 150 litres with integrated balance-of-plant. This new model integrates all the necessary subsystems/ functions in an easy-to-install box, including fuel cell stacks, fuel supply, air compression, communication tool, power conditioning, thermal control, noise reduction, and safety protection. This allows fast integration, installation and easy maintenance, shortening customers’ time-to-market and improving volume production consistency. YCS says that the stack’s fuel utilisation is up to 98%, with over 44% energy conversion efficiency for the entire system, and an expected operating life of 15 000 h. It complies with SAE communication protocols and quick connection hardware interface, for easy vehicle integration, is robust to shock and vibration, and has a high-efficiency air-cleaning mechanism for severe environments. ‘Our new model will speed up the fuel cell technology penetration in vehicle market, as we design and upgrade our product from the understanding of users’ actual needs,’ says Mark Huang, CEO of YC Synergy. ‘It has been adopted by vehicle market and hopefully, before the end of this year, four vehicle models will begin integration with our new product.’ In 2014 YC Synergy unveiled a fuel cell power solution for passenger boats, as it targeted a market niche for fuel cells onboard motor yachts and electric passenger vessels [FCB, June 2014, p4].
