There are different formats for year books. On the one hand, they may consist of chapters which cover important growth areas and provide an up-to-date commentary on selected topics. Alternatively, a much wider net is cast and multiple selections are made from a variety of published articles. This book falls into the latter category. The 1987 Year Book of Haematology is a new title in the Year Book series and is dedicated to the distinguished Haematologist, M. M. Wintrobe. According to the publisher’s preface, its goal is to provide physicians and scientists with a thorough survey of the world literature. The book consists of abstracts of published papers, together with brief expert commentaries. Areas covered include red blood cells, white cells, haemostasis, haematological malignancies and AIDS.
Current Haematology and Oncology Volume 5 Edited by V. F. Fairbanks. Year Book Medical Publishers lnc, London 1987. pp 308. E62.00 Reviews of current developments in a subject face formidable difficulties. They have to be up-to-date, accurand ate, comprehensive readable. Current Haematology and Oncology Volume 5 meets these requirements and its editor, and distinguished panel of North American authors are to be commended for achieving this objective. The book has much to offer the general haematologist as a means of rapid and efficient up-dating. It also has much to offer the sub-specialist haematologist in the areas outwith his sub-speciality. The contents are predominantly concerned with the
Although there is a good selection of topics, the very nature of the book dictates that coverage is fragmentary. In some sections. and particularly in the second on red blood cells, the expert comments that accompany the abstracts are useful and informative. In others they hardly justify their ‘expert’ tag. The title implies that this is an up-to-date source of information. This is not entirely accurate since most of the references are dated 1985. For obvious reasons, the section on AIDS suffers particularly from this and many of the quoted references would now be viewed as of historical interest only. Although the book affords pleasant browsing, it is still not entirely clear who will benefit from it. Certainly, this is not the way to learn Haematology and I doubt whether this is the most effective way of up-dating the non-specialist. F. E. Preston
investigation and treatment of haematological malignancies and the various chapters on this broad topic are an authoritative review of the subject. They will be most valuable to practising Haematologists and to trainees preparing for their higher specialist qualifications. There is also a valuable chapter on haemostasis which is an accurate and up-to-date account of the Factor VIII complex, antithrombin III, Protein C and Protein S. The final chapter is a helpful review of selected blood transfusion topics. This is a valuable account of current Haematology and Oncology. It should be in all Haematology libraries-despite its price. J. F. Davidson
