Russell N. Olmsted, MPH, CIC, APIC 2011 President

As my year of service as president of APIC comes to a close, I reflect on the tremendous accomplishments of our organization and the terrific infection prevention work taking place each and every day in care settings around the world. This work is reflected in the critical work of infection preventionists, health care epidemiologists, and other scientists who improve our understanding through the pages of AJIC. While there is a long list of accomplishments this year, I’d like to call out three in particular. First, we’ve hired a CEO for the Association, Ms Katrina Crist, and are benefiting significantly from her leadership of the superb team at APIC Headquarters. Second, the APIC Board and a broad array of other key stakeholders convened a Strategic Planning Summit earlier this fall aimed at charting the course of APIC and the profession in 2012 and beyond. Last, we successfully celebrated the

25th anniversary of International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW). APIC was joined in record numbers by our colleagues from other associations who are actively engaged in infection prevention. We are hopeful that the enthusiasm and collaboration sparked by this year’s observance will result in better teamwork and improved practices for patients. Here’s to 25 more years. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the volunteer leadership and the more than 14,000 APIC members in the United States and abroad who commit their time and energy to promoting infection prevention and patient safety worldwide. Because of their dedication, patients receive safer care, and lives are saved. It continues to be an honor to serve beside you. I also want to emphasize how important it is for you, as infection preventionists, to advance your professional development. The start of a new year is always a good time to reflect on how sharp your infection prevention tool kit is and start your journey toward certification in infection prevention and control. We have a strong and vibrant pool of infection preventionists who have achieved their CIC, but the desire of the Board, our network of volunteer leadership, and the APIC Headquarters staff is to have at least 80% with CIC credentials. My wish is for each APIC member to strive toward certification. I leave you in good hands under the capable leadership of Michelle Farber, with whom I have served on numerous initiatives and APIC’s board over several years. I am confident that APIC will only grow stronger with her at the helm.
