914298 Evaluation of mechanical characteristics of rock joints under shear loads Muralha, J Proc International Symposium on Rock Joints, Locn, 4-6 June 1990 P657-666. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 Shear strength and shear stiffness of rock joints can be evaluated using sliding tests. Various models for application of these parameters are overviewed: bilinear elastoplastic models, trilinear models, the curvi|inear Kelvin model, and the curvilinear hyperbolic model. Choice of model must be made taking into account fit between experimental data and the model and the purpose to which it will be put.

914299 Yield functions of unsaturated soil Karube, D; Kato, S Yield fu Proc 12th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Rio de Janeiro, 13-18 August 1989 VI, P615-618. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1989 A constitutive equation for unsaturated soils based on elastoplastic theory is presented. Yield loci based on a Cam Clay type energy equation were originally proposed, with equations for plastic strain increments obtained using an associated flow rule. These proposals were tested against results from stress probe testing of compacted kaolin clay, and then modified to a set of combined yield loci. Associated equations for strain increments were also revised.

914300 3-D FE modeling of crack development in earth dam subject to fault movement Sohn, J; Shen, C K; Herrmann, L R Proe 3rd International Symposium on Numerical Models in Geomechanics (NUMOG !11), Niagara Falls, 8-11 May 1989 P649-656. Publ London: Elsevier Applied Science, 1989 Rupture mechanisms of an embankment dam subjected to fault movement at the base have been studied using centrifuge model tests. A numerical study has been carried out to substantiate the results. Stress analysis with the bounding surface plasticity soil model was used. Strain softening behaviour was seen when a soil element experienced a critically high deviatoric stress. Further modelling incorporating fracture propagation and a finer mesh is proposed for more quantitatively accurate solutions.

914301 Stability calculations in jointed rock mass Halonen, 0 Technical Research Centre of Finland Publication N57, Oct 1989. 87P The development of the finite element program JRTEMP is presented. It couples joint elements and thermal loading in plane stress, plane strain, and axisymmetric cases. Each individual joint has its own nonlinear flow law for normal and shear behaviour, based on experimental work by Goodman and Barton, amongst others. These models can be used in conjunction with thermal loading produced by solid dements. The joint elements have zero thickness and no thermal properties. The program can be applied to underground excavations where temperature effects may occur, for example deep mines or radioactive waste repositories.

Design methods 914302 Computer aided designing, detailing and drafting of transmission line tower foundations Santhakumar, A R; Arunachalam, S Proc International Symposium on Computer and Physical Modelling in Geotecluu'cal Engineering, Bangkok, 3-6 December 1986 P99-103. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1989

The application of desktop computers offers an efficient aid to engineering design. Computer Aided Design (CAD) has been applied for design of a reinforced concrete tower foundation. Cost analysis and detailed design drawings can be produced, reducing both the cost and foundation design time. Details of the CAD system development and schematic representation of its working are presented.

914303 Great Belt information system with a 3-D model Porsvig, M; Christensen, F M; Hansen, A Proc 12th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Rio de Janeiro, 13-18 August 1989 VI, P475-478. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1989 As part of Denmark's Great Belt Tunnel project, a 3D geotechnical/geological model and an information system covering an area of 52 sq km have been developed. This allows manageable presentation of data using the Intergraph CAD/CAE system, and the data base system enables rational design of the component structures, in particular it can be used to study effects of different orientations of structures. Available input data are described, and some output illustrated. 914304 Test of different production plans and production scheduling in a rock salt deposit Bruno, R; Massacci, P; Raspa, G Proc 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry, Las Vegas, 27 February-2 March 1989 P397-406. Publ Littleton: A[ME, 1989 The rock salt deposit of Petralia, Sicily, is layered, with variable ore characteristics, and is exploited by room and pillar mining using several superimposed levels. A geostatistical block model of the deposit has been constructed on the basis of physical and chemical parameters of the salt, as related to type of end product. Excavation according to several selection strategies is simulated, considering technical and market constraints. A computer program to run on a PC has been developed to select mining unit and end use of the ore described.

914305 Computer assisted evaluation and planning of quarries Henley, S; Wheeler, A J; Howe, J H; Tucker, D Proc 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry, Las Vegas, 27 February-2 March 1989 P429-441. Publ Littleton: AIME, 1989 Optimisation of quarrying requires detailed assessment of mineral grade variations. A block model approach with logical and numerical post-processing, such as employed in the DATAMINE computer program, is required to obtain necessary parameters for commercial classification. Pit design can be optimised using the Lerchs-Grossman algorithm, followed by interactive analysis considering workable perimeters. The
