Zeolites as Catalyst, Sorbents and Detergent Builders (Proceedings of an International Symposium, Wiirzburg, F.R.G., September 4-8, 1988), edited by H.G. Karge and J. Weitkamp, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1989, xvii + 871 pages, ISBN 0-444-87373-X, US$184.25, Dfl.350.00. As volume 46 in the series on "Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis", this book is a camera-ready production of the Proceedings of an International Symposium on Zeolites held in Wiirzburg, F.R.G., in September 1988. It contains a collection of 76 invited and contributed papers divided into four sections: (1) 38 papers on catalysis and related properties, (2) 19 papers on sorption and diffusion, (3) 6 papers on ion exchange and detergent builders, and (4) 13 papers on modification and characterization of zeolites. However, 4 of the 13 papers in Section 4 could well be placed in Section 1. European, and particularly German, researchers in zeolites were well represented at this symposium and a majority of the papers (66 out of 76) were contributed by them in their respective fields. The symposium covered a wide range of topics in each section. The emphasis was on innovation and application of zeolites. The Catalysis Section features two well-written general papers on the use of zeolite catalysts for the synthesis of specific groups of organic chemicals. The Sorption Section also features two general papers on the use of zeolites in industrial sorption and separation processes. The other papers, each limited to 10 pages, are similar in quality to those in

Journal of Catalysis or Applied Catalysis. Some are continuations of earlier publications in these journals. They are a good source of references and should be viewed as such. Zeolites have a potentially large market as detergent builders to replace phosphates. Unfortunately, this volume contains only 6 European papers on research activities in this area. (4 of them from Germany) and provides at best a partial glimpse. The editors are to be c o m m e n d e d for their effort to include an author index and subject index. N.Y. Recent Aduances in Zeolite Science (Proceedings of the 1989 Meeting of the British Zeolite Association, Cambridge, April 1719, 1989), edited by J. Klinovski and P.J. Barrie, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1989, vii + 309 pages, ISBN 0-444-88129-8, US$151.25, Dfl.295.00 As volume 52 in the series on "Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis", this book is the Proceedings of the 1989 Meeting of British Zeolite Association, held in Cambridge in April 1989. It contains a collection of 4 plenary lectures and 19 submitted papers. With emphasis on the advances in science, 5 papers deal with the use of MAS N M R in a variety of experiments not only in its traditional role as a tool to characterize structures of aluminosilicates, aluminophosphates and silicoaluminophosphates, zeolite acidity and isomorphous framework substitutions; solid-state N M R was also demon-
