Records and Curiosities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology I.L.C. Fergusson, R.W. Taylor and J.M. Watson Bailliere Tindall, London, 1982 (1 I5 pp.) g7.50 This delightful book - unique in its genre - is a treasure-house of information concerning a variety of exceptional situations related to obstetrics, the diseases of women, and human reproduction in general. Written by two distinguished gynaecologists and a former research nurse - all three connected with St. Thomas’ Hospital in London - this volume carries a graceful preface by Sir John Dewhurst, who remarks that besides being a careful compilation of records and curiosities, it is a tribute to the ‘resilience of which many of our patients are capable’. There can be no doubt that this book will be enjoyable reading for many gynaecologists, but for the seasoned practitioner it will be more than that: ‘a permanent challenge which should send him delving back into the recesses of his mind to recall his own careful reminiscences’. We hope that this ‘delving back’ will yield many new records in the areas covered by the book and even add items not yet discussed in the text. Excellently designed, this book will make a charming present for anyone whose work has to do with clinical obstetrics and gynaecology and an inspiration for those who wish to join the club of record hunters. The techique of sampling of breast secreton and thin needle aspiration are extensively described. The second part of the book is compiled by the different forms of benign and non-invasive and invasive malignant mammary dysplasia, benign tumours, tumours. Each subject is well elaborated in the text by a histological, clinical and cytological approach and illustrated by excellent photography.
