Appl. 9512.158, 10 Jan 1995: 5 pp. (In Japanese) The gasification of a waste solid to a fuel gas takes place, and steam is generated using the gas fuel in this system. The system comprises a highcycle regenerating accumulator type combustor (cyclic burner), a corrosionresistant heat exchanger for heating an inert gas, an inert gas circulation loop, and a steam generator in the loop.

Bernstein, N. et al. Proc. I,?(. Co~rf: Nttid. Bed Conthrrsf.. lY9.5, 13, (I), 27-37. The configuration of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is influenced by the fuel type that is to he burned and the specified steam cycle conditions. This paper describes the issues that are addressed when designing a CFB boiler.

250 MWe unit: the largest CFB boiler

Jaud, P. ct al. Proc. /nt. Conf Fluid. Ed Comhr.v/., lY95. 13, (2), 721-728. ‘Circulating fluidized bed’ is one of the most promising new Clean Coal Technologies and has been extensively developed by independent power producers (IPPs) especially in the United States. Today. the largest project approaching operation is the 250 MWe Provence CFB boiler, located in the south of France. At such a size. the CFB technique has now reached a capacity corresponding to thermal power plants operated hy utilities. This new unit, with a ‘pant leg’ design, is also a very important step towards larger size i.e. 400 MWe and greater. The purpose of the Provence project was to replace the existing pulverized coal boiler unit 4, commissioned in 1967. of the ProvenceGardanne power plant, with a new CFB boiler while reusing most of the existing equipment. The first firing of the boiler is due in May 1995. The progress is described in the construction of the plant and technical details are provided of the new boiler and auxiliaries. The associated R&D program designed to give a thorough evaluation of thi\ boiler with a view to the design of larger CFBs in the future.

Ground dried coal is fed through a central tube at the top and gas is introduced at a given velocity through the tube from the bottom in this design. The coal particles arc separated by size at the top of the apparatus

(In German) The article describes measures exemplified by St Andrea Power Station in Austria which comprise conversion of the firing system from lignite to bituminous coal, integration of a biomass grate for combined combustion including biomass, conversion of the flue gas desulfurization process from the pure dry system to a semidry system, complete renovation of the unit control system, and partial refurbishment of the steam turbine. The conversion will result in an increase in unit capacity and a reduction in variable operating costs for fuel and additives.

The New York State Kr Electricity Corporation conducted a pilot test program to evaluate how feasible the co-firing of a pulverized coal plant with renewable wood fuels would be. The goal was to estahli\h if such a cofiring system could reduce air emissions while maintaining good operational procedures and cost controls. The report recommended further evaluation of the generation and emission impacts using woods of varied moisture contents and at varied British thermal unit input rates to determine if a driving system is a cost-effective option.

97102114 Steam activation of a bituminous coal in a multistage fluidized bed pilot plant: operation and simulation model Martin-Gullon, I. et al. Id. Eng. Chem. Rrs., 19Yh, 35, (1 I). 4130-4146. The development and application of a hydrodynamic and kinetic model to simulate the experimental data from a three-stage fluidized hed pilot plant with downcomers was undertaken. This was used to study the activated carbon production from a Spanish bituminous coal by steam gasification, With the kinetic equation and the pilot plant’s experimental solids residence time distribution, the model simulates the overall process that takes place in the reactor. The proposed model is able to reproduce the experimental results satisfactorily.
