The complete coding sequences and amino acid sequences for both canine and human 32K alveolar surfaetant proteins (ASP) are disclosed; clones for the 10K protein have also been obtained. Methods and vectors for obtaining these proteins in recombinant form are described. The availability of large amounts of these proteins through recombinant techniques permits the use of ASP in suitable pharmaceutical compositions in the treatment of respiratory deficiency syndromes.

The P-glycoprotein is the determinant in the multidrug resistance phenotype exhibited by living cells. The nucleic acid equivalent of the eDNA may be cloned in a recombinant plasmid or phage. The eDNA may also be used as a probe in determining multidrug resistance in cells. The DNA molecules specific for the P-glycoprotein is in the form of a gene family where various members oftbe gene family are amplified to varying degrees in multidrug resistant cells from various sources.
