PATENT ABSTRACTS

598

The complete coding sequences and amino acid sequences for both canine and human 32K alveolar surfaetant proteins (ASP) are disclosed; clones for the 10K protein have also been obtained. Methods and vectors for obtaining these proteins in recombinant form are described. The availability of large amounts of these proteins through recombinant techniques permits the use of ASP in suitable pharmaceutical compositions in the treatment of respiratory deficiency syndromes.

4912039 MULTIDRUG RESISTANCE IN MAMMALIAN CELL LINES AND ISOLATION OF DETERMINANT GLYCOPROTEIN DNA John R Riordan, Toronto, Canada assigned to HSC Research Development Corporation A method for isolating a eDNA specific for Pglycoprotein is disclosed. The P-glycoprotein is the determinant in the multidrug resistance phenotype exhibited by living cells. The nucleic acid equivalent of the eDNA may be cloned in a recombinant plasmid or phage. The eDNA may also be used as a probe in determining multidrug resistance in cells. The DNA molecules specific for the P-glycoprotein is in the form of a gene family where various members oftbe gene family are amplified to varying degrees in multidrug resistant cells from various sources.

4912044 PREPARATION OF MESOPHILIC MICROORGANISMS WHICH CONTAIN A D-HYDANTOINASE WHICH IS ACTIVE AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE Elard Jacob, Karsten Henco, Stefa Marcinowski, Gerhard Schenk, Eisenberg, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to BASF Aktiengescllschaft A description is given of a genertic engineering process for the preparation ofmesophilic microorganisms which contain a hydantoinase active at elevated temperature, and of DNA sequences which code for this enzyme.

4912046 PORTABLE INDUCIBLE CONTROL SYSTEM Dennis J Henner, Daniel G Yansura assigned to Genentech Inc Shuttle vector systems are provided for the regulated expression of subject genes in transformed hosts. A promoter/operator which does not originate with the transformed host cell controls expression of the subject gene and a repressor, which also does not originate with the host cell, regulates the promoter/operator. According to this invention, promoter/operatorrepressor functionalities from one bacterium are used in other bacteria, thereby obviating the need to locate homologous expression regulatory sequences for each bacterial host.

EUCARYOTIC EXPRESSION SYSTEM Randal Kaufman, Andre Dorner assigned to Genetics Institute Inc This invention provides vectors, improved host cells and improved methods for producing a heterologous protein by culturing an improved eucaryotic host cell of this invention transformed or transfected with a vector capable of directing the expression of the heterologous protein. The preferred improved host cell of this invention is a mammalian host cell containing and capable of expressing an anti-sense GRP78 DNA sequence.

4912206 CDNA CLONE ENCODING BRAIN AMYLOID OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Dmitry Y Goldgaber, Michael Lerman, D Carleton Gajdusek assigned to The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services Four clones have been isolated from an adult human brain cDNA library using an
