medium. Scotchweld 2216, made by 3M (UK) Limited, was found to fulfill both these needs. The application of this 'modified' epoxy, which combines strength of adhesion with flexibility when cured, was facilitated by employing the recently-developed 3M PreMetered Applicatoras shown in Fig. 4.

Once air is excluded, Quick Metal cures within one to two hours to form a tough plastic which is resistant to lubricants, cutting fluids, and industrial solvents within a -55°C to 155°C operating range; it has a typical compressive strength of 1550 MPa; and is claimed to have a breakloose strength greater than that of the original press-fit. Rubber-to-metal A single-coat bonding agent which is effective with both natural and synthetic rubber has been introduced by Anchor Chemical (UK) Limited into their Ty-Ply range of products. Ty-Ply 1863, a solution of blended synthetic polymers and dispersed additives, can be dip- or spray-applied, and used to bond natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene, polychloroprene, styrene-butadiene, polybutadiene, chlorsulphurated polyethylene and polyacrylate rubbers to a variety of metal substrates.

Preview The following is a preview of some forthcoming events -- conferences, exhibitions -arranged in chronological order. Further details can be obtained from the address given at the end of each item. A full list of future meetings is given in the Calendar.

Pira, the research association for the paper and board, printing and packaging industries, is arranging a series of conferences, seminars, teach-ins, and technical tutorials during the 19811982 season. An introduction to adhesives to be held on 20 October 1981 at Leatherhead will be of interest to personnel concerned with adhesive applications in packaging, print finishing, and bookbinding companies, and also sales staff of adhesive and dispensing machinery manufacturers. INT.J.ADHESION AND ADHESIVES OCTOBER 1981

the courses from: Pira, Randalls Road,

Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 7RU, England. There will be two 3-day intensive workshops in bonding technology, entitled: Engineering with Adhesives held in the USA later this year, organized by The Center for Professional Advancement. Intended for managers, engineers, and scientists responsible for specifying, selecting and supervising the use of bonding materials, machinery and methods, and technical sales and service personnel; the workshops are intended to provide a study of adhesive bonding technology as applied to structural and assembly areas, with time given for discussion of common problems and participants' individual problems. The first workshop, to be held in New Jersey on 26-28 October 1981, will include studies on: fundamental aspects of adhesion; industrial uses of primers; plasma and electrostatic surface preparation; structural adhesives - epoxies and acrylics; water based adhesives; hot melt adhesives; pressure sensitive tapes, film adhesives; adhesive testing; industrial coating equipment and practices; and mixing and metering equipment. The second workshop will be held in San Francisco, California, on 7-9 December 1981 and, although the programme will be different, will cover a similar range of topics. Further details of both workshops are available from: General Information,

PO Box H, The Center for Professional Advancement, East Brunswick, NJ 08816, USA. The programme for the seminar on

Practical methods of assembly using adhesives organized by The Institution of Production Engineers in association with "The Design Council, to be held at The Bowater Conference Centre, London, England, on 19 November 1981, is now available. Papers will be given on the following subjects: uses of adhesives in the manufacturing industry; benefits and limitations of adhesives; design and production considerations; and health and safety; together with four case studies.
