GE Additive invests in education

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

GE is now accepting applications from schools for its US$10 million investment in 3D printing. Over the next five years the company plans to put in place two educational programs, to develop future additive manufacturing (AM) talent.

One global program will focus on primary and secondary schools, and the other one focuses on colleges and universities. Some US$8 million will be used to subsidize up to 50 metal additive machines to colleges and universities globally. Priority

will be given to institutions with curriculum and/or research underway in the area of additive manufacturing. GE Additive; www.geadditive.com

support our customers’ strategic business goals,’ said Trevor Schauenberg, president and CEO of GE Capital Industrial Finance. GE has already invested approximately US$1.5 billion in additive technologies, in addition to building a global network of additive centers focused on advancing the science. ‘Additive manufacturing is the new revolution, changing the way we design and manufacture products faster, more

sophisticated and more cost efficient,’ added Mohammad Ehteshami, vice president for additive integration at GE Additive. ‘By partnering with GE Capital, we’re now able to democratize additive manufacturing, making it easier for businesses to buy additive machines, fostering their competitiveness and accelerating the adoption rate. We’re excited to be part of the additive revolution.’ GE Additive; www.geadditive.com

AM and its potential in a defense context. This work will summarise the ability of relevant AM technologies, identify existing R&T and manufacturing capabilities in Europe, and determine areas where further R&T activities should be carried out. The second work strand is a technology demonstration of AM. To this end, a 3D printer will be deployed as part of the

EDA Sponsored Airlift Exercise, to be held in Zaragoza, Spain. At the end of the project, the results will be presented at an exhibition for military staff, along with equipment and demonstrators, in order to raise awareness on the possible impact of AM in defense. EDA; www.eda.europa.eu

GE offers AM ‘financial solutions’ GE’s new GE Additive business plans to collaborate with GE Capital to sell and finance metal additive machines, making it potentially easier for manufacturers to access the company’s 3D printing technology. GE Capital will develop a range of customized ‘financial solutions’ for end users worldwide, the company says. ‘Our dual expertise both in manufacturing and in equipment finance, allows us to create competitive financial solutions that

EDA launches new AM project The European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched a project covering additive manufacturing (AM) and defense. The project’s objective is to assess the areas where AM can have a positive impact on defense capabilities and to demonstrate its feasibility. The first activity carried out under this initiative will be a desktop study to place

AM software allows for parameter changes Concept Laser says that it now offers CL WRX Control software on its LaserCUSING machines with all configuration options available. The software now allows users to view and vary parameter

options, improving results. Factors that can be fine-tuned now include laser power, scan speed, trace spacing, spot size and offset to original contour. The software tool can be stored on a PC and can

thus be edited directly at an office workstation. Training from the company is also available.

plant engineering, aviation through to the fossil fuels extraction industry. One specialty is the production of spare parts made of stainless steel for beverage filling plants. The company uses a M2 cusing Multilaser machine from Concept Laser to

make the parts. The company can also make spare parts on demand using the additive manufacturing (AM) process, reducing downtime in the process.
