'Computer-aided evaluation of a structure for h o u s i n g ' B u l l C o m p u t A i d e d A r c b i t I)es., No 13 (October 1973) The SAR70 program has been written as a tool within the SAR design m e t h o d for supports. A support is a building in which a variety of floorplans for dwellings can hc made. The design m e t h o d allows evaluation of such a s u p p o r t . SAR7O can be used to generate all variations possible within a support structure, subject to a given set of norms.
Campion, I). 74.62 'The creation and use of all online database for architectural design' Bull. C o m p u t A i d e d Archit. D e s , No 12 (July 1973) The paper shows how to adopt a systcmatic procedure for the collection and compilation of certain types of architectural database. It also shows how design data can be selectively retrieved from them and u p d a t e d as necessary according to design decisions.
Eastman, C. and Schwartz, M. 74.63 'Methods for treating variable shaped objects in c.a.d.' Bull. Cornput. A i d e d Arcbit. Des. No 13 (October 1973) Three m e t h o d s are described for generating variable shaped planar elements for use in both integrated and a u t o m a t e d design. Sutherland's 'rubber object' m e t h o d is first reviewed followed by two procedures directed toward domain structured representations and are called the Alpha and Beta algorithms. Several applications are con sidered, the most co mp lex being the alloca tion of activity spaces and their connection by a circulation system. The generative approach allows resolution of a formula tion much broader than existing m e t h o d s and suggests a new line of development for this problem.

Des., No 13 (October 1973) The paper describes the design problems posed by elevator lobbies and establishes the m ethod by which they are currently designed. A technique for the analysis of elevator lobbies and other horizontal circulation areas in office buildings.

Miles, J . H . 74.67 'Computer m e t h o d for identification of boiler transfer functions' NASA Tcch. Brief, Lewis Research Center (September 1972) Report NASA TM-X-2436 An interactive computer-aided procedure has been developed to provide identification of boiler transfer functions using frequency rcsponseda t a . The m e t h o d uses this data to obtain a satisfactory transfer function for both high and low vapours list quality data. The frequency response data consists of the amplitude ratio and the p h a ~ angle difference of two parameters at various frequencies. A timesharing system is recommended when using this method.
Pho, T. K. and Lapidus, L. 74.68 'Topics inc.a.d. Part 1. An o p t i m u m tearing algorithm for recycle systems. Part 2. Synthesis of optimal heat exchanger networks by tree searching algorithms' Amer. lust. Chem. h'ng. J., Vol 19, No 6 (November 1 9 7 3 ) p p 1170 1189. Part 1. The concepts of ineligible streams and two-way edge reduction are e xt e nde d to simplify the signal flow diagram of a recycle process flowsheet graph. The authors solve the m i n i m u m weighted recycle stream problem, a ~ i g n i n g an arbitrary weighting factor to each stream and seeking precedenceordering to give rise to a set of torn streams with m i n i m u m weighting sum. A basic tearing algorithm is derived and detailed examples given. Part 2. The authors derive a compact matrix repeesentation of an acyclic exchanger net work and this is used to generate a decision tree for the heat exchanger problem. The optimal network, imbedded in one of the tree nodes is located by e nume ra t i ng tire entire tree using a search procedure. Prob Ictus ranging in size from four to tell streams " illustrate the method.

Strttct D i v , Vol 99 (1973) No ST I. pp 91 111 The me t hod of indirect structural anatvsis is e xt e nde d to tile analysis of elastic c o u t i n u a plates, shells or three-dimensional solids. Incorporation with the finite element met hod is achieved by a concept similar to the Mueller Breslau principle. Introducing equivalent nodal forces makes possible the determination of influence surfaces for every deflection and for every internal strc~> in the c o n t i n u u m by performing a singlc inversion of the global stiffness matrix Once the influence surfaces are known, critical live load pnsitioning can be calculated in i)rdcr to determine both extreme stresses and deflections.
