No 13 (October 1973) Three m e t h o d s are described for generating variable shaped planar elements for use in both integrated and a u t o m a t e d design. Sutherland's 'rubber object' m e t h o d is first reviewed followed by two procedures directed toward domain structured representations and are called the Alpha and Beta algorithms. Several applications are con sidered, the most co mp lex being the alloca tion of activity spaces and their connection by a circulation system. The generative approach allows resolution of a formula tion much broader than existing m e t h o d s and suggests a new line of development for this problem.

The concepts of ineligible streams and two-way edge reduction are e xt e nde d to simplify the signal flow diagram of a recycle process flowsheet graph. The authors solve the m i n i m u m weighted recycle stream problem, a ~ i g n i n g an arbitrary weighting factor to each stream and seeking precedenceordering to give rise to a set of torn streams with m i n i m u m weighting sum. A basic tearing algorithm is derived and detailed examples given. Part 2. The authors derive a compact matrix repeesentation of an acyclic exchanger net work and this is used to generate a decision tree for the heat exchanger problem. The optimal network, imbedded in one of the tree nodes is located by e nume ra t i ng tire entire tree using a search procedure. Prob Ictus ranging in size from four to tell streams " illustrate the method.
