Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1988 The Tihange III nuclear plant, Belgium, includes a large basement excavated in schistose rock. Settlements of the basement floor over a period of years were higher than those calculated assuming a succession of homogeneous isotropic layers, which neglected influence of stress relaxation and easing of the schistosity when overburden layers were removed. If this initial uplift is taken into account, most displacements fall within the calculated range.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1988 Basal shear surfaces of compound landslides in horizontally bedded soft rocks usually conform with bedding planes, but only certain preferred planes become shear surfaces. Some intrinsic weakness is assumed to exist on these planes. Barton Clay cliffs where this phenomenon is evident have been studied. Microfabric variations are found for the shear planes. Depositional and diagenetic influences on this are considered, and sedimentalogical factors which might influence the natural choice of bedding planes are discussed.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1987 Construction of a local road over 3.5-7.5m muskeg using a fill of height of 12m is described. Special procedures adopted included a granular drainage blanket on top of the muskeg and the use of staged construction, with 2-3 weeks between lifts to allow dissipation of excess pore pressure. Measured and predicted settlements were in good agreement, but settlement monitoring indicated that longer time intervals may be advantageous. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 Road construction across soft and peaty ground is described. A trial involving excavation of the peat to a predetermined level and replacement with expanded polystyrene blocks was carried out. A concrete slab was placed on top of the EPS blocks and the road constructed on this. The bearing capacity is dependent on groundwater level and the load is carried by the buoyancy of the EPS blocks. Settlements will be monitored over a period of years.

A scheme has been developed to monitor water balance around a roadway and characterise the sensitive sectors where problems are most likely. These areas can be examined in detail. The basic procedure can be varied as required.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 The mechano-lattice approach, which encompasses elastoplastic behaviour of each of the pavement and subgrade materials, can predict channellised rutting and residual strain. The method is described and used to predict rutting and stress distribution in a granular pavement. Predictions and field observations are in good agreement.

892265 Information obtained from pile loading tests in Greece (In French) Bustamante, M; Christoulas, S; Frank, R; Yannaros, H Bull Liaison Labs Ponts Chaussees N155, May-June 1988, t)81-86 Two series of tests are described. In one, piles were vibroinserted into layered sandy/loamy/clayey soils with soil compaction. Results of horizontal and vertical loading tests are compared with those of tube loading tests, to develop a method of predicting settlement and bearing capacity of piles from tube load testing. At the second site, instrumented piles were installed in soft/sandy clays. Side friction and end bearing contributions were separated. The tests are part of a program to define conditions of maximum reliability for interpreting pile loading tests.

892266 Lateral resistance and deflection of flexible piles Meyerhof, G G; Sastry, V V R N; Yalcin, A S Can Geotech J I1"25, N3, Aug 1988, t)511-522 Lateral loading tests were performed on flexible model piles of various materials at various embedment depths in loose sand and soft clay, to study the influence of a range of pile stiffnesses on ultimate lateral resistance and groundline displacements of piles under working loads. The results are compared with similar data for rigid piles, and with theoretical relations based on effective embedment depths for ultimate and working loads of flexible piles.
