PATENTS Anti-extrusion seal for high temperature applications Applicant: Halliburton Energy Services Inc, USA This patent describes a seal design for applications such as sealing down-hole instrumentation packages. It is intended to be more capable of maintaining a seal during temperature cycling than a standard elastomeric seal arrangement. The seal (100) includes a sealing member (125) positioned between a resilient ring (130) and an inner pre-load ring (135). An angular ring (140) is energised by the resilient ring (130). In addition there can be an outer pre-load ring (145), abutting the inner pre-load ring. The sealing member (125) is compliant or flexible, and in some embodiments, is composed of an elastomeric material. The O-ring illustrated may be pre-loaded by a number of methods including Bellville or wave-spring washers. A number of alternative potential geometries are also shown. Compression piston ring
Door seal
Applicant: Federal-Mogul Burscheid GmbH, Germany This compression piston ring – for an internal combustion engine – has an annular groove in the centre of the ring’s outer diameter surface. A lower web runs, at least in some regions, parallel to the counter-sliding surface, and the upper web is designed as a taper-faced Napier element. Patent number: WO/2010/094247 Inventor: P.-K. Applicant: RBP Associates Ltd, UK A seal for a door makes use of a closed-cell foam that has acoustic dampening properties, and is retained within a housing. In this particular embodiment the housing, which ensures that the foam retains a rectangular shape, is constructed of a material made from plastics and may form the complete door stop. However, it can be constructed from any other material, such as steel or aluminium, to suit the application for which the seal is to be used. The housing may be extruded and the cross-section of the overall seal is generally rectangular. The housing extends around three of the sides of the foam, which protrudes slightly beyond the rectangular side. In use, the seal is located against the door stop and, between the door frame and the door. Various geometries and methods of installation are illustrated by the patent. Chemical seal Applicant: Armaturenbau GmbH, Germany This invention relates to a chemical seal, in particular for use with corrosive or high-viscosity media. It preferably takes the form of a diaphragm or in-line seal, composed of at least one chemical seal housing that has a diaphragm. In order to make the chemical seal resistant to corrosive media, and broaden its field of application, the housing and the diaphragm are made from a fluoropolymer. Seal for a rolling bearing Self-cleaning rotor seal Applicants/Inventors: G. Holmes and T. Rybka, USA A centrifugal pellet dryer with a self-cleaning rotor seal, replaceable wear plates and a fluidpowered dewatering tower forms the subject of this patent. The shaft seal has a V-ring design. A series of grooves in the radial seal plate – outside the seal diameter – serves to expel pellets from the seal vicinity. Patent number: WO/2010/093813 Publication date: 19 August 2010
Applicant: Schaeffler Technologies GmbH & Co Kg, Germany A lip seal has been developed that snap-fits into the outer race of a bearing and the primary lip seals against the inner race. An L-section ring is press-fitted into the race and a secondary outer lip seals on this ring. A labyrinth is also formed by the L-section metal ring and the outer lip. A number of alternatives are also illustrated by the patent. Patent number: WO/2010/094361 Inventor: B. Nicola Publication date: 26 August 2010
Method of fabricating a PTFE seal unit Applicant: Federal-Mogul Corp, USA A method of fabricating a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seal unit forms the subject of this patent. The method involves a PTFE seal element and a vacuum chamber that contains electrodes. The PTFE seal element is placed on one of the electrodes and a vacuum pressure is drawn in the chamber, and a first process gas is introduced into the chamber. A high frequency signal is applied to the electrodes and a discharge plasma is produced to etch and chemically modify the surface of the PTFE seal element (with the discharge plasma). The vacuum chamber is then purged with a second process gas and is restored to atmospheric pressure. The seal element is rinsed and an adhesion promoter is applied to its etched and chemically modified surface. Finally, the etched and chemically modified surface of the PTFE seal element is attached to a carrier by moulding an elastomeric material between the seal element and the carrier.
