Railway inspector wins ndt prize
Cambridge Consultants has just put its acoustic emission testing service on the back of a lorry so that the system can be taken anywhere the roads go instead of needing to be set up at each new site (Fig.2). Before now the service has been used for pressure vessels, bridges, pipework and other structures as well as research. The mobile version, with its own generator, should ease the operation and shorten the time needed. The instrumentation, the Maedas 7, was built at Cambridge Consultants; it is a multichannel zone location system which has proved useful as a prototype (Fig.3).
By October this year there will be almost no imperial sized radiographic film, paper, cassettes or hangers on sale in Great Britain. That is if a plan drawn up by British radiographic suppliers goes according to timetable. The plan, drawn up by the British Photographic Manufacturers Association and the British Photographic Importers Association calls for metrication of smaller sizes (up to 10 x 12 inches) by August and most of the rest of October. The plan is based on British Standard 3490:1972 on sizes of film for industrial radiography and x-ray crystallography. Any further change depends on the International Standards Organization. Klaus Egelkraut who leads the ndt group of West German Railways has won the 1974 Berthold prize of the German Society for ndt. Viktor Hauk, Chairman of the Society presented the prize, worth about £830, at the Society's annual conference in Nijmegen, the Netherlands on 20th May. Professor Hauk told delegates that Mr. Egelkraut won the prize by his work in ndt training for the society as well as for his scientific work at the Federal Railway Research Establishment at Minden. Mr Egelkraut is foreman of the German society's education committee.

The German Society for Materials Testing is to hold its annual conference in Wiirzsburg next year on 3 r d - 4 t h April. The conference is to have as its theme, the testing of materials and components from the point of view of the aviation industry. Berlin spring for German society The German Society for NDT (DGZfP) is to hold its next annual conference in Berlin on 6 t h - 7 t h May 1975. The theme of the conference has already been chosen as the prevention of defects in components. The Society has invited authors who wish to contribute on this or another theme of ndt to send abstracts to the Society before 15th November 1974. The abstracts should be between ~ and 1 page of type with up to 6 indexing terms included. Swedish agency gets bigger AB Kontrollmetod, a Swedish company which acts as Scandinavian agents for several ndt manufacturers has moved into new premises (Fig.4). The 1400 m 2 building contains offices, warehousing, exhibition rooms, a service workshop and a radiation-proof radiographic facility. The company is already active in x and gamma radiography, magnetic particle and dye-penetrant testing,

non-contact metrology, ultrasonics and hardness testing. The managing director, Kjell Axelson, recently visited England to see suppliers.
