Consider three categories by end use that parallel librarian tasks: (1) collection development, (2) bibliographic access, and (3) reference. Most guidebooks have something to offer in all three categories, but favor one over all. Collection development guidebooks format along the sectors of the discipline and further identify the relevant sources by reference book type, such as dictionaries, bibliographies, directories, statistical sources, and periodicals. Daniells’ comprehensive B~lsiness Inforr?ralior~ Solr~as [I], for example, uses chapter titles corresponding to business school areas of academic concentration. Bibliographic access guidebooks provide indexing by acknowledged subject headings, citing relevant information sources, and may sometimes include annotations. Encyclopedirr oJ’Busirtcs.s Infornzntion Sourcm [2] indexes sources by industry and high-interest topics, Brownstone and Carruth’s Where to Find Business Information [3] uses familiar subject headings to refer to a section of annotated business information sources, and Berle’s Business Injixmution Sourcehook [4] uses industries and management functions to index its business books, periodicals, and directories. Reference guidebooks refer to sources of information with the end use of the information in mind. It may provide definitions, alternatives, and context to the information seeker to help him~her be more discriminating and to foster critical thinking. Strauss’ ~ffndb~~k ~~B~~.~i~~~~.s.s I?~~~~~~flfi~~i? (51 provides background on basic statistical concepts. such as sampling and time series analysis, to prepare the information seeker for the different types ofavailable statistical data. Freed and Diodato’s Busirwss infiwmotion Desk Reference [6] offers a question/answer format to help the information seeker ask the right question. With the ever-increasing volume of available information, reference guidebooks are the obvious choice of information seekers mindful of efficiencies of time and effort. Lavin’s Business Injiirmrrtion is an excellent example of a reference guidebook. It is replete with the discussion of the critical thinking involved in information-seeking strategies that result in effective data gathering.
