tory) Sensors and sensing technology for the future powertrain systems are discussed aiming to obtain the solutions to realize ultra low emissions and low fuel consumption with minimum cost. It is concluded that the number of sensors should be minimized replacing the conventional sensors into more multi-functional sensors, such as a combustion pressure sensor. The use of digital signal processing technology is the cost effective way for the sampling and the conditioning of the information fused in the signals of these multi-functional sensors. The method to express the concept of load transfer course in a body structure is introduced. Three desirable conditions for the structural stiffness are shown through the physical investigation. For the crashworthiness, desirable conditions can be shown with the concept of 5msRD. Optimum structures are obtained based on these conditions.

The structure consists of two hat section beams and a reinforcement plate which is placed inside the box cross section and in the vertical direction of load line. It was confirmed experimentally that the plate is effective to arrest the buckling deformation in the side-wall of the beam and the absorbed energy of the beam increases. First, the method for predicting the input force applied to a truck frame on rough road has been developed. Good agreement was obtained between the results of the dynamic analysis program (ADAMS) and a experiment. Next, the effect of suspension specification, such as the dumping force of shock absorber, spring rate and bound stopper clearance, on the input load applied to a frame was studied. As a result, the weight of a frame can be decreased.

Effects of Repeating Load Waves on Fatigue Life of Spot9534090 Welded Joints for Thin Steel Sheet - Comparison of Mild Steel and High Strength Steel - Hiroshi Abe, Tsugihiko Satoh (Osaka Institute of Technology) In this study, fatigue lives of single spot-welded joint made of mild steel sheet and high strength steel sheets of 0.8 mm in thickness are obtained by experiments under the constant amplitude repeating loads of R = 0 and R = - 1 and the 2-steps repeating loads in tensile-shear, then fatigue lives for both kinds of steel are compared. Moreover, fatigue lives of multi spot-welded joints of single hat-type made of both kinds of steel sheets under torsional repeating loads of R = 0 and R = - 1 are obtained and compared. 9534108 Concurrent Engineering: An Overview Shuichi Fukuda (Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology) An overview of concurrent engineering is given. What differentiates concurrent engineering from the conventional product development is that it is collaboration-based and that every engineer with different background at different processes collaborate with a through-the-life-cycle view.
