Congress Co-Chairs Editorial n 1987, the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee approved a n initiative for the development of a World Congress on Sport Sciences. The first congress was developed as a pilot and was conducted in Colorado Springs in 1988. Based on the initial success of this program it was decided to continue with these Congresses and to hold t h e m at the sites of the Olympic Games. The Sydney Congress is the Fifth in this series. The committee has structured an excellent program, which is divided into Medical, Physical, Biological and Behavioural Science sections, with Keynote and Invited Speakers who are international authorities in their respective areas. This Congress is comprehensive and fully integrated as reflected in this publication containing the papers of the Keynote and Invited Speakers. We sincerely hope that the membership of Sports Medicine Australia will m a k e it a priority to attend this high quality Congress that is devoted to promoting a n exchange of ideas among leading scientists involved in Sport Science and Medicine, and H u m a n Movement. This is a special, exciting opportunity to disseminate information to practitioners working in Olympic and allied health programs throughout the world.

Charles Dillman and Bruce Elliott Congress Co-Chairs
Editorial his issue of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport contains the keynote and invited lectures from the 5th IOC World Congress on Sport Sciences, to be held in Sydney, 31 October - 5 November, 1999. We are fortunate in having a group of invited speakers who are the leaders in their respective areas of endeavour within the sport sciences, and who were willing to provide their manuscripts in advance of the meeting. I sincerely t h a n k them for their efforts. The papers were reviewed prior to their acceptance and I would like to t h a n k the m e m b e r s of the scientific organising committee of the Congress for their help, in particular Prof. Bruce Abernethy, Assoc. Prof. Tim Ackland, Prof. Bruce Elliott, Prof. J a m e s Hay and Prof. Barry Oakes. The J o u r n a l h a s begun publishing invited lectures from the a n n u a l conferences and I would like to see this practice continue, and be extended to include the conference a b s t r a c t s in the years ahead. This is a n i m p o r t a n t way of disseminating the sports science arid medicine research outcomes to the wider scientific community and showcasing the quality of o u r Australian scientists and clinicians. I look forward to seeing m a n y of you at the Congress.
