Akzo Nobel sees success of restructuring Akzo Nobel NV is showing signs of the success of its restructuring. There was a net profit of €287 M in 1Q 2005, more than twice that of a year earlier. Sales for the quarter were up 3% at €3 bn. EBIT of the paints and coatings division fell a quarter to €62 M because of falling sales volume and rising raw material costs. Chemical division profits were up 14% at €97 M. And EBIT of the animal medicine division was up a quarter at €53 M. An exceptional gain of €149 M drove up EBIT of drugs arm Organon to €236 M. NEW PRODUCTS High performance fluidising additive from Cabot Cabot Corp has introduced CabO-Sil, CT-1221, a new grade of fumed silica that improves the flow properties, storage stability and applications performance of powder coatings. The product also improves the flow of metallic particles in special coatings, and allows high quality surface finishes to be obtained. Due to its inherent hydrophobia, the product is effective at low concentrations of 0.1-0.2%.

World Paints and Coatings to 2007 (Study 1771)

Pyrogenic silica; controlling the flow

World demand for paints and coatings will reach US$83 bn in 2007 driven by higher quality, environmentally friendlier products (eg, powder-based, rad-cure). Emerging markets in Asia/Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe will lead gains while the North American and Western European regions remain dominant. This study analyzes the global paint and coating industry. It presents historical demand data (1992, 1997 and 2002) and forecasts to 2007 and 2012 by formulation (eg, solvent-based, water-based, powder, radiationcurable); by market (eg, construction, motor vehicles); by world region and for 25 countries. The study also examines the global market environment, details industry structure and market share, and profiles 36 leading industry competitors including Akzo Nobel, PPG Industries, ICU, DuPont, Valspar, BASF, Sherwin-Williams, RPM, SigmaKalon, Nippon Paint, and Kansai Paint.

Pyrogenic silicas (HDK) are indispensable aids in many coating materials. They lend powder paints the free flow properties necessary to apply them. In liquid paints, pyrogenic silicas have a thickening effect. Special HDK grades matched to the paint system can control the flow properties of the liquid paint so that it is easy to apply and will flow smoothly, but without running on vertical surfaces.
