PATENTS in grooves incorporated into the base of the seal groove. A triple-lip design is also illustrated with a pair of leak indicator ports that are aligned with the inter-lip spaces. Publication number: WO/2009/107495 Inventors: K. Tsuji and A. Muramatsu Publication date: 3 September 2009

Fuel-cell membrane electrode assembly seal Applicant: Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Japan Provided is a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for a fuel cell in which sliding between the electrolyte membrane and a first reinforcing member – because of the expansion and contraction of the electrolyte membrane – can be suppressed by interposing the first reinforcing member that has a low modulus of elasticity, between the electrolyte membrane and a second reinforcing member, which has a high modulus of elasticity. Fuel-cell seal Applicant: Carl Freudenberg Kg, Germany A seal has been developed for a fuel cell. It contains recesses or passages that are moulded into the seal. The purpose is to reduce contact forces and avoid excessive stress on the fuel-cell membrane layers. Publication number: WO/2009/109352 Inventors: S. Geiss and L. Crown cap seal for sealing and closing containers

Improved design for a balance piston seal for turbines

Applicant: Morrion’s Tecnic SA, Spain This invention relates to a seal for crown-type caps that are used to seal over the stopper on bottles or other containers that house pressurised liquids (drinks and, in particular, Cava, Champagne and sparkling wine), which guarantees that the bottle is sealed. The shape of the seal uniformly controls the radial surface of the stopper. The seal significantly reduces production costs and the associated effects on the environment. Applicant: MAN Turbo Ag, Germany An improved design for a balance piston seal for turbines or turbo-compressors is described. The purpose is to improve both the sealing ability and rotor dynamics of the machine beyond that achieved with current honeycombs or hole slot seals. Pressure can be applied to the seal spool to control the distortion and hence the pressure drop profile and rotor stability. Publication number: WO/2009/112064 Inventors: A. Markwalder, G. Kleynhans and U. Baumann Publication date: 17 September 2009

Flange seal ring Applicant: Daniel Measurement and Control Inc, USA This flange sealing system is designed to be used when, for example, it is necessary to insert a flowmeter in a process line – particularly in parts with a large diameter. It may be found that the flange designs are not compatible. A support ring has a seal on each radial face. A series of cogs are arranged around the outer circumference. These may, for instance, latch into a ring-joint groove, or on the step of a raised face, and by means of threaded adjusters the flange ring can be centralised with the pipe bore. Applicant: NOK Corp, Japan A rotary shaft lip-seal is designed to have reduced initial torque and the ability to maintain good sealing properties over a long period. A peroxide cross-linking agent is incorporated into a fluororubber polymer comprising 95–40 wt.% fluororubber terpolymer, obtained by copolymerisation with a perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether and 5–60 wt.% liquid fluororubber polymer, to prepare a fluororubber composition, and then crosslinking and moulding the composition. Leaf seal apparatus Applicant: Eagle Industry Co Ltd, Japan Provided is an easily assembled leaf seal apparatus whereby setting and controlling the tilt angles and gaps of the sealing portions is easy to accomplish. The leaves are pre-bent to include a nesting V-section followed by a further bend to set the leaf angle. Hence, the leaf spacing and angle to the shaft are pres-set. Alloy coating for protecting honeycomb seals Applicant: Siemens Aktiengesellschaft, Germany This layer is designed to reduce the oxidation and/or corrosion of honeycomb seals that are used in gas turbines. Increasing sulphur content of fuels is leading to the need for improved high-temperature corrosion resistance, but the honeycomb needs to retain its crushable properties. The coating described can provide the resistance required. It is also not too brittle to be applied, unlike alternative coatings. The MCrAlY alloy constituents, with M, which is Fe, Ni, Co (especially M = Fe), comprise (in wt%) 18–35% chromium (Cr), 3–15% aluminium (Al), 0.2– 2% yttrium (Y) and 78.8% to 39% iron (Fe), and optionally up to 3% titanium (Ti) , up to 3% hafnium (Hf) and up to 3% silicon (Si). High-temperature and high-pressure seal

An insert flange seal that uses a series of threaded adjusters to permit the insert to be centralised with the pip bore (WO/2009/111560).

Applicant: Nippon Valqua Industries, Ltd, Japan This subject of this patent is a seal that is intended to maintain good sealing characteristics for a long period at a high temperature and high pressure, and can be easily separated from a sealing surface. The seal is a form of L-section that is fitted to a groove with a delta shape on the low-pressure side. The rear face of the
