XXsys receives patent protection for Robo-Wrapper machine PATENT protection for its Robo-Wrapper@ machine is being granted by the US Patent & Trademark Office, says San-Diego based XXsys Technologies. The patent covers the firm’s automated composite jacketing process for seismic retrofit and corrosion rehabilitation. The California Department of Transport (Caltrans) is using the process to strengthen defective freeway support columns. Dr Gloria Ma, XXsys chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) says: “The US Patent reaffirms our technology leadership in applying composite materials and technologies to infrastructure renewal. The

transportation infrastructure market has enormous need in both the USA and worldwide. In the USA the Department of Transportation has identified one-third of all our bridges as being structurally deficient or functionally obsolete over 185 000 bridges. The estimated cost of repair for the structurally deficient bridges alone is over $78 billion. The Department of Transportation estimates repair costs for overall transportation infrastructure at 62 12 billion. Worldwide the potential for composite use for infrastructure renewal is far larger, and the applications even greater.”

Zoltek to expand carbon capacity in US and Europe CARBON fibre producer Zoltek says that it will increase capacity at two of its plants in the USA and Europe. The firm plans to install and begin operations of three new continuous carbonization lines in Abilene, Texas, USA, in the spring and summer of this year. It also plans simultaneously to install two identical lines at its facility in Hungary. Eleven additional production lines are scheduled to be installed by the company in 1998, allocated between Abilene and the Hungarian facility, which is located close to Budapest. Each line will

have a rated capacity of about 45 000 tonnes of carbon Bbre production a year. Zoltek wants to become the world’s largest producer of carbon fibre by the year 2000 and says its objective is to increase annual manufacturing capacity to more than 1.6 million tonnes by 2000. The carbon fibres made at Abilene will be for the USA market, and those produced in Hungary are destined mainly for Europe and Asia. Zoltek Companies Inc; tel: + I-3t4-2915110; fax: + l-314-2918536.

industry. One of our most important customers is Airbus, and with the recently announced very large increase in aircraft orders this partnership means that we will now be able to meet a longtime objective of Culver City Composites to supply our customers with a European produced product. This partnership enables us to both achieve results sooner at less cost than going it alone.” Roland Runge, president of AIK, adds: “Global competition coupled with the consolidation in the composites industry makes this internationally orientated partnership with Culver City Composites strategically advantageous.”
