Dentistry on Stamps 1 'he Sandvig Collections are a museum of peasant culture located at Maihaugen (May Hill) close to Lillehammer, in the central part of Norway known as the Gudbrandsdal Valley. The museum contains old farmsteads, heirlooms, native art, old workshops (still functioning), and the Garmo Stave Church. There are more than 150 buildings and more than 30,000 exhibits. The houses were moved, reassembled, and furnished in the styles of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lillehammer is at the northern end of Lake Mjosa, about a 3-hour ride north of Oslo. The area is well known as a resort with clear, pure air. Because of the curative reputation of its air, Anders Sandvig settled there after completing his study of dentistry in Ber lin. At the time, he was suffering from tuberculosis and hoped that the move from Berlin would cure him. Anders Sandvig was born in 1862 in Romsdal, in western Norway. When Sandvig settled in Lillehammer, the valley was beginning to modernize and he recognized the importance of saving outstanding examples of Norwegian folk art, architecture, and handicrafts. Sandvig started collecting in 1887 and in 1894 was able to move an old house from Lokre, Skjak, to Lillehammer to house the col lection that he had accumulated. Sandvig organized the collection as an independent private foundation and remained as the managing director until 1946. He died at the age of 89 on Feb 16, 1950. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the collections, Norway issued two stamps calling attention to them. The first day of issue of the stamps was June 10, 1987. The authors thank Dr. A. S. Schwartz for calling these stamps to their attention. Hannelore T. Loevy, CD, PhD Aletha Kowitz, MA
