This publication is part of a series of special books or volumes of papers presented at several international symposia organised by the Interactions of Soil Minerals with Organic Components and Microorganisms, a working group of the International Union of Soil Sciences, between 1992 and 2001. Volume 28B presents 31 papers from the 3rd symposium held in May 2000, and covers the ecological significance of interactions between clay minerals, organic matter and soil biota. This publication will be appreciated by those readers of Applied Clay Science working in the fields of clay – organic reactions, soil science, and environmental aspects of clay mineralogy. The papers include:

Microbial ecology of soil biofilms, Effects of abiotic processes in soils on the bioavailability of anthropogenic organic residues, Phytoremediation of oil-contaminated soils and studies of hydrocarbon-polluted groundwaters, Properties, behaviour and potential application of enzymes in soils, Adsorption of insecticidal toxins on clays and effects of humic acids, Transformation and binding of TNT in soils amended with activated carbon, Biogeochemistry of metals and trace elements in soils as influenced by soil – plant –microbial interactions, Soil ecosystem properties, microbial diversity and ecosystem assessments, Effects of Cu and Hg ions on gene transfer by the transformations and transduction in Bacillus subtilis, Impact of tillage practices on nitrate dynamics, leaching and microbial activity in a crop rotation, Methods for studying the fate of allelochemicals in soils, Future perspectives on the environment and human health interactions.

Several papers on humic acid formation, soil microbial activity and bioformation of minerals under various types of forests and lichen, Microbial responses and environmental implications of heavy metals and metal –organic complexes in soils,
