‘Advantage’ colorants are an extension of Milliken Chemicals’ polymeric colorant technology for plastics. This non-pigment colour chemistry is said to offer solutions to the traditional problems experienced in using pigments in colour polyolefins. Advantage colorants are pelletized, custom formulated concentrates for opaque polyolefin applications. They are said to be especially suited for injection moulded products, such as lids and closures, made from polypropylene where dimensional and polyethylene, tolerances are tight or where warpage from nucleation is a problem. Advantage colour concentrates look just like pigment pellet concentrates and are used in exactly the same way. They are said to offer several competitive advantages to moulders of opaque, coloured polyolefm parts: higher quality, increased part consistency, greater productivity, etc. Conventional pigments have a nucleating This causes on polyolefins. effect unpredictable and inconsistent effects on the shrinkage, warpage, and physical properties of moulded parts. Parts with highly variable dimensions and physical properties are a common problem for moulders of coloured polypropylene and polyethylene products. Advantage colorants, says the company, do not nucleate. For this reason they do not have a significant effect on shrinkage, warpage or dimensions. Anchor Chemical to market BASF imidazoles Anchor Chemical, a division of Air Products, has signed an agreement with BASF to market its range of imidazoles for epoxybased applications in Europe. Effective immediately, Anchor Chemical will begin marketing the products under its own trade name of Imicure. BASF will continue to manufacture the product at its facility in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Imidazoles are latent curing agents, typically used to accelerate dicyandiamide in a range of adhesives and composite applications. Dual-role for colorant in PU foam Miles Inc in the USA says that the use of carbon black pigment in polyurethane foam enhances the insulation value. The company cites the case of a refrigerator cabinet liner made with HCFC- 141b as the blowing agent. The pigment increases the energy efficiency of HCFC-141b by 6%. Fine particle micas KMG Minerals (now a division of Franklin Industries Minerals) is developing high-purity micas of less than 15 microns vs traditional micas of 35-200 microns. Finer grades are designed to replace specialty talcs as TPO reinforcement and are said to increase stiffness without degrading impact properties. Three such products will be introduced in 1996.
