ORN and the Competency & Credentialing Institute have developed Preparing for Magnet Recognition: A Perioperative Excellence Retreat, a program that will provide attendees with expert knowledge to ensure success in achieving Magnet status. Presentations given by Cheryl Tatano Beck, RN, DNSc, CNM, FAAN; Paula Graling, RN, MSN, CNOR, CNS; and Patricia C. Seifert, RN, MSN, CNOR, CRNFA, FAAN, will focus on the 14 Forces of Magnetism and methods for effectively demonstrating each of the forces within the OR. In addition, they will address common perioperative challenges,

including how to help staff members understand the connection between what they do and how it applies to achieving Magnet recognition, how to prepare teams for this organizational journey, and how to embody the Magnet principles. Chief nursing officers, directors of perioperative nursing, Magnet coordinators, and others highly involved in the application process should plan to attend this conference. The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, June 6-7, 2008, in Chicago, Illinois. For more information or to register, visit http://www.aorn.org/Events.

Most-Effective Osteoporosis Medication Not Determined

N

ot enough scientific evidence exists to show that bisphosphonates, the most commonly used osteoporosis medications, are more effective than their alternatives, according to a December 17, 2007, news release from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). An AHRQ report compared the effectiveness and risks of six bisphosphonates (ie, alendronate, etidronate, ibandronate, pamidronate, risedronate, zoledronic acid). It also compared bisphosphonates with alternative osteoporosis treatments (ie, estrogen, calcitonin, calcium, vitamin D, testosterone, parathyroid hormone, selective estrogen receptor modulators). Although some of the bisphosphonates were found to prevent spinal fractures and some of the alternatives were found to prevent hip and other nonspinal fractures, direct comparisons have not

shown bisphosphonates to be superior to other therapies for the prevention of bone fractures. In addition, the report indicated that many patients with osteoporosis stop taking their medications, including supplements such as calcium, as prescribed because • they do not experience any osteoporosis symptoms, • they experience medication-related side effects, or • the dosing is too frequent. Patients who were non-medication compliant, however, increased their risks for bone fractures. Many osteoporosis medications prevent fractures, but none is proven best [news release]. Rockville, MD: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; December 17, 2007.
