EUGENE N. MYERS INTERNATIONAL LECTURER ON HEAD AND NECK CANCER SEAN LIAM SELLARS, MB, BCH, FRCS(E), FCS (SA), FRCS (I), FRCS (Ed), FACS
Professor Sean Sellars has been Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Cape Town and the Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town since 1976. He was born and educated in England, attended Cambridge University, and undertook his medical studies at the University of London (St Mary's Hospital). His postgraduate specialist training was through Oxford. In 1969 he took a staff posting in Cape Town, South Africa, in order to further his experience and much to that country's benefit, he has stayed there ever since. He has received wide national and international recognition for his work and holds fellowships of 5 colleges of surgeons, including the American College of Surgeons. In 1987 he was elected to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum and in 1991 was made an Honorary Fellow of the College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Administratively, he has been extremely active, participating in numerous university, hospital, and professional society committees and currently is President of the South African Society of Head and Neck Oncology. He carries a large local undergraduate and postgraduate teaching commitment and has lectured widely in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Europe, West, East, and Southern Africa, the Middle East, Australasia, and North America. He has made many congress presentations, and his publications number over 100. His main interests have been otology, particularly congenital deafness and head and neck cancer. Above all, Sean Sellars is known for his great enthusiasm and dedication to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The consunamate clinician and surgeon, he has developed a huge personal experience in his chosen fields and is truly a great asset to our specialty.
