The ' C designation in the model number however d e n o t e s that each of the RC pumps is e q u i p p e d with (Mrnell's p a t e n t e d Cycloseal 'x'. The C}closeal design incorporates a single mechanical seal into an innovative seal c h a m b e r design to create a leak free, m a i n t e n a n c e free trait. The (:ycloseal requires n o v e n t i n g or external flush and is kleally stilted for operation in remote locations. The award was offered in recognition of outstanding Kalrez parts applications in gear p u m p s designed to operate in extremes of temperature up to 300 "C and pressures of 100 bar in the chemical process industry. The global awards prog r a m m e was s p o n s o r e d by D u P o n t D o w Elastomers to c o m m e m o r a t e the 25th anniversary of Kalrez perfluoroelastomer parts, i n t r o d u c e d 2~ years ago as the premier sealing solution for aggressive processing environments. Gather decided to replace previously installed metal/PTFE O-rings because of the problem of deformation at high temperatures, causing leakage at the sealing surfaces c o n t p r o m i s i n g i n d u s t r y safety r e q u i r e m e n t s . According to 1)ipl. Eng. Klaus L0bke, the c o m p a n y ' s technical Manager, only ()-rings of Kalrez were able to w i t h s t a n d long t e r m e x p o s u r e to aggressive chemicals at such extremes of heat and pressure. In n u m e r o u s u t h e r cases, Kalrcz parts fitted up to ten years ago arc still working w i t h o u t problem. Standard d o u b l e m e c h a n i c a l seals need some type of barrier or buffer fluid b e t w e e n the two seals . A radical n e w design of seal support system, called the Turbo Tank, has b e e n developed by Bachus Inc. of Nashville, USA. The Turbo Tank pushes up to 2 gal/min of low pressure barrier fluid through the double seal. With a ten gallon reservoir capable of about five times the heat dissipation capacity of conventional thermal c o n v e c t i o n tanks, the system requires no air or nitrogen blanket. Because the Turbo %ink generates its o w n flow with about 5 ft of head, p l a c e m e n t of the tank in relation to the mechanical seal is not critical, as it is with standard c o n v e c t i o n tanks. The Turbo Tank, mated with a d o u b l e m e c h a n i c a l seal, removes heat from the seal faces and r u b b e r c o m p o n e n t s , dissolves crystals and washes away solid particles that can cross through the faces of mechanical seals. The Turbo Tank prevents air e n t r a p m e n t and holds vacuu m through the seal c h a m b e r to protect vertical turbine p u m p s from losing prime. Cooling and lubrication is provided to seal faces forced to r u n dry. Bachus reports that the Turbo tank costs less than most double mechanical seals.
