Two specialized books of potential interest to those working in the individual areas concerned have been published recently.

Chemistry and technology of polyols for polyurethanes This is a new handbook from Rapra Technology. Author John S. Stahley is an engineer responsible for compressor commissioning with Dresser-Rand, and he has first-hand experience of these seals and their requirements. The book does not assume prior knowledge, and has a comprehensive glossary, so the reader does not immediately get lost in jargon. It covers the history, basic design and seal configurations in turn. The relative merits of different seal designs and configurations are discussed. The various venting, seal and buffer gas supply, and safety systems are discussed step by step to make them readily understandable. The problem of seal contamination, which the author considers to be the major factor in seal

reliability, is covered in some depth. Finally, a series of field experience examples illustrates how problems have arisen and been solved. As someone well aware of gas seals but not with a lot of direct personal involvement, I found this a very useful and informative book. A few illustrations are not of very good quality, but these can usually be referenced to a seal manufacturer’s catalog or website for a better version. This is a very worthwhile little book.
