o find out what pharmacists and advertisers expect of pharmacy journals and to discover how pharmacy journals can meet the profession's needs, APHA is sponsoring a day-long conference of pharmacy journal editors on November 20 at the New York Hilton in New York City . This is the first such conference for pharmacy journals although medical and dental journals have had many successful conferences of this kind. Two panel discussions and four talks will highlight the two sessions and at the luncheon meeting Austin Smith, MD, president of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, will be headline speaker. His to pic- The Physician-Pharmacist-Patient Relationship. Giving editors an opportunity to find out what their readers want in a journal will be three panelists-Rosario J. Mannino, New Jersey community pharmacist; Louis P. Jeffrey, New York hospital pharmacist, and Linwood F .

Tice, pharmaceutical educator. Their discussion of what pharmacists look for in pharmacy journals will open the morning session. Presiding during this portion of the conference will be Robert E . Abrams, ACA executive secretary . Maxwell James, manager, trade relations, Lederle Laboratories, will present ano ther side of the picture in his talk on what the advertiser looks for in pharmacy journals. Climaxing the morning session, William S. Apple, APHA executive director, will take an overall look at pharmacy publications in his address on professional journals or trade publications. Following the luncheon at which APHA treasurer, Hugo H. Schaefer, will preside, Winton B. Rankin, assistant FDA commissioner, will provide his audience with an insight ;)n how FDA laws affect pharmacy journal ads. His talk will introduce the afternoon session gaveled by George B. Griffenhagen, director, APHA division of communications.

The session will continue with a discussion of the role the advertising agency has in pharmacy pUblications. Outlining this role will by Henry Halpern, vice president, media and marketing, Sudler and Hennessey. Concluding the day-long conference, three panelists will describe how a publication should be evaluated. Scheduled panelists include Theodore Caplow, professo r of the department of sociology, Columbia University, and Madeline Oxford Holland, pharmaceutical journalist. Attending the meeting by invitation only will be publishers, editors, media buyers, advertising managers, marketing managers and trade relations managers of the prescription drug industry. The conference was organized at the request of several state association secretaries after APHA Executive Director Apple emphasized the importance of improving the standards of pharmacy journal editorial content and advertising . •
