Freudenberg research team develops the world’s smallest Simmerring
E
ngineers at Freudenberg Dichtungs- und Schwingungstechnik GmbH & Co Kg (FDS) have succeeded in developing and producing what they claim is the world’s smallest elastomer Simmerring. The ring can seal rotating shafts with a diameter of 1 mm and a rotation speed of up to 10 000 rpm. Prototypes of the record-breaking seal have already completed test runs of more than 5000 hours under operating loads without any visible signs of wear, says the company. In the future, the seals will be used inside miniature devices equipped with complex electronics and mechanical systems. The micro-Simmerrings are also to be used in miniature motors used, for example, in tiny pumps. Often, a very small quantity of liquid needs to be precisely dosed and conveyed to its destination. Tiny pumps, which can only function properly with micro-seals, are used for this purpose. In medicine, these devices enable analyses to be carried out on a fraction of a drop of blood. 16
Sealing Technology
Freudenberg says that it is working intensively on the future production of these extremely small seal systems. The objective is to develop sophisticated vulcanisation tools for shaping such minute parts.
