The material is divided into three parts: the early part up to World War I that deals with the early observations of polymerization; next the classic period from 1914-1942; and the third period from 1942-1960 when the science reached full maturity. Morris, P. J. T., The American Synthetic Rubber Research Program, University of Pennsylvania Press, Philadelphia, 1989. Details of the history of the government-funded synthetic rubber research program, 1942-1956. Proskauer, E. S. (ed.), 'Benchmark Papers in Polymer Chemistry', Dowden, Hutchinson & Ross, Stroudsburg, PA, 1978. The series sets out to provide the practitioner with the original literature in the study of polymer structure, behavior and properties. Volume 1: Hermans, J. J. (ed.), 'Polymer Solution Properties'; Part I, Statistics and Thermodynamics; Part II, Hydrodynamics and Light Scattering. Seymour, R. B. (ed.), 'Pioneers in Polymer Science', Kluwer, Boston, 1989. The proceedings of an ACS Symposium that is dedicated to the 12 Nobel Laureate polymer scientists and 11 other scientists who have been largely responsible for the development of polymer science. Chapters are written by Stahl, Mark, Sperling, Fisher, Marvel, Carraher and Pauling, and detail the contributions made by pre 20th century polymer pioneers to the modern scientists in the areas of plastics, fibers, inorganic polymers, elastomers and engineering polymers. Seymour, R. B. and G. S. Kirshenbaum (eds.), 'High Performance Polymers: Their Origin and Development', Elsevier, New York, 1986. Proceedings of the Symposium on the History of High Performance Polymers of the American Chemical Society Meeting held in New York, April 1986. Reviews include: engineering thermoplastics—polyamides, polyesters, acetal styrenics, sulfurcontaining polymers, poly(aryl ether ketones), poly(ether imides); blends and alloys; liquid crystalline polymers; fluoroplastics; thermosets; fibers, carbon fibers, polybenzimidazoles; elastomers; high barrier packaging materials. Seymour, R. S. (ed.), 'History of Polymer Science and Technology', Dekker, New York, 1982. A series of articles first published in the 'Journal of Macromolecular Science' that details the events leading to the age of polymers. Accounts of fibers, elastomers, plastics, coatings, adhesives and foams are also presented. Stahl, G. A. (ed.), 'Polymer Science Overview: A Tribute to Herman F. Mark', ACS, Washington, DC, 1981. Proceedings of a Symposium at the 180th American Chemical Society Meeting, Las Vegas, August 1980 to honor Herman F. Mark's 85th birthday. Special papers were presented in tribute to Professor Mark, as well as overviews of many topics of polymer science. (A translation of Herman Staudinger's 'Arbeitserinnerungen', published by Guthig, Heidelberg, 1961.) An historical review of the beginnings of macromolecular chemistry in the collected papers of Staudinger, Nobel Prize winner, teacher and 'apostle' for the 'new branch of organic chemistry'. Vogl, O. and E. H. Immergut (eds.), 'Polymer Science in the Next Decade: Trends, Opportunities, PrO/tnises', Wiley, New York, 1987. An international symposium honoring Herman F. Mark on his/90th birthday, it emphasizes trends in the development of polymer science in the future and forecasts new developments and new directions.
