PATENTS shaped cross-section. This provides a dual-lip base in the groove with radial sides that combine to provide stability against deformation. Publication number: WO/2010/143488 Inventor: T. Hayashi Publication date: 16 December 2010

Metallic gasket Applicant: Nippon Gasket Co Ltd, Japan This invention concerns a multi-layered cylinder-head gasket. An intermediate layer has a variable cross-section around the circumference of the cylinder bores, and may include slits shaped in a circular arc. This helps to optimise the contact pressure of the gasket and reduce bending of the intermediate layer. Publication number: WO/2010/143592 Inventors: T. Tanaka S. Shinozaki and K. Yoshijima Publication date: 16 December 2010

Seal ring Applicant: Berg Propulsion Technology Ab, Sweden The seal described is designed specifically for applications such as the rotary feed-through on a drive shaft which provides the hydraulics for a propeller with controllable pitch on, for instance, a ship or wind turbine. It is intended to replace current designs that use white metal rings. The idea is to use a stable outer material and a material with bearing capabilities. For example, suitable materials for the first ring member are bearing bronze, tin bronze, leaded bronze, aluminium bronze, nickel bronze, silicon bronze, brass, copper lead alloy, cast iron or polymeric composites. Suitable materials for the second ring member include steel, titanium or titanium alloys. As an example, the first ring member may be made of bearing bronze, while steel may be used for the second ring member. Publication number: WO/2010/144040 Inventor: L. A segmented leaf seal in which the leaves adjacent to segment ends vary in length. Patent WO/2010/146805 has further details.

made from an elastomer – either swelling or non-swelling – while the pressurising medium is composed of a swellable material or a suitable liquid. Publication number: WO/2010/146374 Inventor: A. Vliegenthart Publication date: 23 December 2010

release, as water, of structural hydroxyl groups in the clay particles. Publication number: WO/2010/146794 Inventors: K. Motegi, H. Tsuda and Y. Takechi Publication date: 23 December 2010

Shaft seal Heat-resistant seal member Applicant: Tomoegawa Co Ltd, Japan A heat-resistant clay film is described by this patent. It consists of aligned clay particles. Among the clay particles, and/or among the clay particle layers, is a substance that decomposes at temperatures exceeding 100ºC but not exceeding the temperature that allows the

Applicant: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Japan A labyrinth, ‘abradable’ seal forms the subject of this patent. Publication number: WO/2010/146797 Inventors: H. Uehara, T. Shinohara, T. Nakano, S. Nishimoto and Y. Hirakawa Publication date: 23 December 2010

Retrievable seal Applicant: Swellfix Bv, The Netherlands This invention relates to a retrievable seal that incorporates a ‘swellable’ material. It also relates to a method of retrieving such as a down-hole seal. Either the outer member or the pressure containing medium (or both of these) may be composed of the swellable material. The cavity for the pressurising medium can be configured to permit venting of pressure in order to assist retrieval of the seal. The outer member may be 14
