Recent books Cluster Analysis in Clinical Chemistry: A Model, by W. Vogt, D. Nagel and H. Sator. John Wiley Sons, Chichester, 1987, pp. 180, 2 24 The aim of this book is to show, through an explanation of the theory and the demonstration of a clinical example, how cluster analysis can aid clinical diagnosis. Disadvantages of the analysis are discussed as well as the benefits for the clinician who is required to interpret a mass of data. Heterocyclic Compounds. ing drugs in the treatment and prophylaxis of angina pectoris are examined and the subject of diabetes is again addressed with the discovery of useful inhibitors of a dose reductase. In the face of ever broadening literature fronts, the worth of expertly composed reviews of vital research topics is highlighted yet again in this notable volume. Comprendre Presses d’envoi

Each volume of the series The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds deals with syntheses, reactions, properties, structures, physical chemistry and utility of compounds belonging to a specific ring system or class. This series has become the basic reference collection for information on heterocyclic compounds. This volume concerns methods for the synthesis of a heterocyclic ring which is fused to another ring. The first ring may be either homocyclic or heterocyclic and the second one is heterocyclic and contains 5-8 atoms at least 1 of which is nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur. 107 chapters are followed by appendix, list of books and monographs, references (up to 1986). A general index and an index of ring systems are very useful.

Photon Emission from Biological Systems, by B. Jezowska-Trzebiatowska B. Kochel, J. Slawinski and W. Strek. World Scientific Publishing Co., Ltd., Singapore, distributed by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd., 1987, pp. 267, f. 31.10 This publication, consisting of the 16 lectures presented at the 1st International Symposium on Photon Emission from Biological Systems by a variety of researchers from 10 countries of Europe and Asia, is addressed at specialists whose disciplines are related to electromagnetic radiation and its role in biological systems. The spontaneous endogenous emission of low intensity electromagnetic radiation from diverse biological systems ranging from the basic biomolecules to man, is the central topic of lectures. Progress in Medicinal Chemistry 24, edited by G. P. Ellis and G. B. West. Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1987, pp. 360, Dfl 275.00 Eight fields representing important advances in the chemistry and biology of medicinal products are reviewed in this volume. The properties of ricin andits possible use in immunology are discussed. Another chapter reviews the evidence for functional histamine receptors in the mammalian central nervous system. The physiologically mysterious molybdenum-containing enzymes are examined. The anti-tumor activity of biologically active platinum complexes, the present medicinal use of Cannabis and cannabimimetic drugs, and the latest use of hypoglycemic agents in the treatment of insulin-resistant diabetic patients are further topics. Liposomes in Cell Biology and Pharmacology, by P. Machy and L. Leserman. Les Editions 1NSERM - John LlBBEY EUROTEXT, Paris London, 1987, pp. 192, FF 270,00, & 24.00 Published simultaneously in French and English versions, this Research In series encompasses all the fields of biomedical and health research in which French research and INSERM in particular holds an important international position. Liposomes are artificial vesicles consisting of one or more phospholipid bilayers. Drugs and other molecules may be transported in liposomes, either via encapsulation within their aqueous spaces or by association with their lipid membranes. In cell biology, liposomes are employed to transport biologically active molecules into cells and in the investigation of endocytosis. Various ligands, such as monoclonal antibodies to cell surface molecules, can be covalently coupled to liposomes making it possible to deliver the liposomes and their contents to selected cell populations. These properties of bulk transport and specific targeting have stimulated research into the therapeutic potential of liposomes. Liposomes in Cell Biology and Pharmacology offers a critical evaluation of more than 1000 published articles. The 1st section defines liposomes, describes their physicochemical properties and reviews the procedures for the preparation of liposomes of different types. The 2nd section examines approaches to the use of liposomes in therapy. The 3rd section presents methods of coupling specific ligands to liposomes and of studying their interaction with cells. In their concluding section the authors assess future applications of liposomes, especially in therapy.
