Baumgartens launches tablet household cleaners breakthrough Baumgartens announced an innovative range of new waterless cleaners under its environmentally friendly brand Conserve at All Things Organic Conference & Tradeshow. The products are sold in tablet form with consumers adding water once ready to use. Conserve Cleaners compete with national brands but are significantly more cost effective than any other environmentally friendly cleaners on the market today, the company says. The full range consists of a glass and window cleaner, multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and odour eliminator. Conserve Cleaners cost up to 50% less than other green cleaners, and up to 40% less than national brands of conventional, spray-bottle, liquid cleaners. According to lab tests, the patented tablet technology dissolves fully and competes with green and non-green liquid cleaners alike, Baumgartens reports. ‘We are able to achieve these cost-savings for consumers because our products have eliminated the heaviest ingredient in household cleaners... water’, says David Baumgarten, VP, Baumgartens. ‘Without water to weigh down the product, we lower shipping weight by 85% and use 75% less space as each empty bottle comes with four tablets – the equivalent of four full bottles of conventional liquid cleaner’. Conserve Cleaners make a contribution at every level of the EPA’s Resources Conservation Challenge’s ‘7R’s of Packaging’ by removing, reducing, AUGUST 2009

Other Green big wipes for industrial use Waterless cleaning expert Sycamore UK and Dulux have developed biodegradable heavy-duty clean-up wipes for industrial applications. Industrial Green Big Wipes deliver the same cleaning benefits offered by market standard Big Wipes but, unlike the latter, will break down, making them suitable for applications entailing the clean-up of nonhazardous substances where the used wipes can be disposed off in the normal waste or channelled to ‘green’ waste composting facilities. The disposable plant-based viscose fabric cloths also contain a biodegradable oil-based cleaning solution. The industrial wipes can quickly get rid of traces of oil- and water-based paints, varnish, instant grab adhesives, silicone, and other substances. Paint and Resin Times, Apr 2009, (2), 8
Rhodia and IFP join forces to optimize oil reserve extraction Rhodia and IFP have joined forces to launch a joint services and consulting offer targeting chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) activities for the petroleum industry. The objective is to offer oil companies chemical solutions adapted to different operating conditions so as to maximize the oil production from reservoirs. For a large number of oil fields, this approach could increase average oil extraction rates (currently estimated at 35%) by 20%. Rhodia and IFP’s partnership is based on developing chemical formulations specifically designed for particular conditions in the laboratory, then testing them at pilot units before using them in the oilfield itself. IFP has specialized in chemical methods of oil recovery since the 1990s and will contribute its geoscientific expertise to the partnership. Rhodia’s Novecare business is an expert in physicochemicals and oil recovery and has R&D capacity in Bordeaux, France. Rhodia is also able to keep up with demand for speciality surfactants at the industrial level. Its association with IFP means it will be able to offer clients a full range of services, from diagnostics and simulation to formulation and efficiency testing. According to Rhodia, numerous companies across the world have already expressed an interest. At present just 4% of oil worldwide is extracted using EOR. By 2020, the demand for chemical products used in EOR would be worth €2-3 bn.
